Hi, was thinking about upgrading but don't want to get caught in the D70 and canon market. I see some of your guys pics in your sig and am impressed. I believe tfinch has a olympyus e300 and his shots look gorgeous. What do you guys recommend?

good pics != good camera

good pics = good photographer

That said, the Canon Digital Rebel XT (350D) is a great beginner's camera, as well as the Nikon D50.

What's wrong with the Nikon and Canon market...?

I've been very pleased with my D50. I'm still learning (so much so that if you looked up photography n00b in the dictionary, you' probably see a poorly composed photo of me), but it's been easy learning thus far.

Below $500

That's a very very low budget to look for a DSLR. You might get lucky and find a really hot deal, but chances are you won't find a new body for that price. Besides, if your budget is really that low, you're better off getting a prosumer P&S - the cost of SLR lenses will be far above what you're willing to spend.

Not sure why you'd want to avoid Nikon and Canon... just pick one and stick with it is all. In response to another thread the other day I found some Canon 10Ds without lenses on eBay in the $300-400 range.

Edit: I was looking at listings with just a few hours left, but I just looked at some completed listings and they're selling for more than that.

Below $500? I don't think that's possible. Look at the Canon S3 IS, it's not a DSLR but it has all of the manual controls via the menu system (minus the actual focus control on the lense).

I know, but I feel like I am limited to what I can shoot with my g5. Here are some pics I took recently.

I have a G5 already, and was just wondering if there was anything out there in that price range.

You might be able to pick up a used dSLR with a lens, but it probably won't be very good. Plus, you'll be limited by your lens selection. A Canon S3 IS, Panasonic FZ7, or Pana FZ30 are all pretty good cameras with (iirc) a full set of manual controls, to help with the learning curve of photography.

So I'm seeing that a dslr in that price range won't work. Ebay has some but I bet they will go up as the auction closes. Like I said, I have a Canon G5 already which has all the manual functions that I would need. I just feel limited in the lens department.

Yeah, I saw that deal today and was hella excited. Until I noticed that the price went back up to around $4xx.
