While I love Subarus, I don't think any of them get over 25mpg on the highway, which falls quite short of the OP's wishes.

stick 2.5i impreza should do it. I would take the auto though. only 1mpg diff on highway.

(manual) 20 city / 27 highway
(auto) 20 city/ 26 highway

I am biased though since I just test drove legacy 2.5i sedan on Saturday. Me think a used Subaru is in my immediate future :)

I've looked it up before, but I swore that the base Impreza and Forester both got 20/25, but it's definitely 20/27. Why would you choose the auto? I'd think the stick would be a lot more fun, and I greatly dislike 4-speed autos.

While I really like Subarus and would love to get a new Forester, I'm not a fan of the gas mileage. Because of mileage, my next vehicle (hopefully still a few years away) will most likely be the new Honda Fit. We currently have a Mazda Tribute that gets crap mileage, but we need the space whenever we travel to visit family, which comprises about half of our yearly mileage. The new Honda Fit with the seats folded down has only 4 cubic feet less cargo space than our Tribute and should get double the mileage.

Most drivers are not good enough to beat the at. And this does come with manumatic, so you can still do engine brake and shifting if you want to. I do have a problem with Subaru putting down shift as towards the driver though. Somehow to me it makes more sense when I pull the shifter I am up shifting.

Dislike the new Forester. Basically caving in to NA demand for bigger car.

Kind of agree on the new forester. The old was quirky, but it had its own niche with its size, mileage and capabilties. The new one just looks another also-ran in the small SUV segment.

I've been getting ~29.8 mixed in my 2.5i manual 5speed 2006 legacy wagon. About 80% highway 20% city. My low points are around 26 mixed with summer ac or winter gas + heat.

That's a better average than I'm getting in my Forester (26mpg), but I would estimate my driving mix as 60/40 highway/city.
On long cross country highway runs it gets about 30-31mpg cruising at 70-80.

How is the interior room in the TSX? I love my Legacy GT, but interior ergonomics could use improvement for a 6' 4" 250lb guy. I thought a TSX would make a nice DD and have a separate car entirely devoted to 'fun'
