looking for a CHEAP computer

They have a 90mhz pentium, and it is fine for them, but the computer is just too old (not too slow). I was thinking sempron, but I would like your suggestions too. A LCD would be nice, but they have a 13" crt that flickers like crazy and they are happy with it, so anything new would do.

I know you said you'd be building it..but just get a deal on a dell.

Edit: Yeah, anyway I'd get a sempron, a 512MB corsair value stick, a seagate 80GB...dvd burner for $45...etc.

And a 17" LCD (or 19) can be had for under $300 easy.

Yeah probably best to go with a Dell. You can get a Dimension 3000 with a LCD display for $550 or so.
Or check eBay.

There are a lot of options but to narrow it down we really need to know how ?cheap? and what you mean by ?new? (new compared to what they have or current generation new) also do they need ?new? everything (are any of the parts or software salvageable, I would guess not being 90MHz and 13? crt but I have to ask).

look on any deal websites (techbargains, gottadeal, etc), and look for dell deals or HP desktop deals. I remember once there was an HP with amd sempron, 256mb ram, etc all basic specs for $199 or $299 or something that came with a free 15in LCD too. Just look out for those deals, it'll be more cost efficient than building your own. ALso if it's for a church, it might be a good idea to go with a cheap laptop, so that you (or whoever) can move it around and do presentations and stuff? just a thought.

Ya don't worry about buildign your own. You aren't going to beat those EXTREME rebates on the low end. If you really wanted, there is always ebay.

a skt 754 sempron would be a good choice for cheap(2600+) and a cheap chaintech board. but really anything under $500 is probably better off just being bought from a store/online with some rebates or coupon

If you want a computer/LCD for cheap I would suggest Dell. I know you're not allowed to post coupon codes or things like that but they have some deals like this right now...

If you really want just a cheap computer that doesn't matter how fast it is, at tiger direct.com you can get a intel 2.53ghz dual core celeron with windows XP home, 256 MB of ddr pc-2700 ram, 80 gig hard drive, CD-RW 52x52x32x, integrated audio, video and lan, 56k modem, 250 watt poweer supply, mouse, keyboard, 17" viewable CRT, speakers, color inkjet printer, and comes with a lot of software (mainly AOL stuff but some other software). All for.....(drum roll please)....$199.98 plus shipping and tax.

there is no such thing as a dual core celeron. a celeron D is simply a celeron that is decent(based on prescott core 533mhz fsb). and the aol PC is not that good of a deal because you have to sign a year contract with aol for $23 a month (23x12=$276)

So wait. The pentium D and the celeron D are not both Dual cores? So the celeron D is Celeron Decent? what does that mean? What makes a Celeron D Different from A regular Celeron? Be sides the fact that is has 64-bit exended memory tech is there any thing else? Are you Sure that it only has one processing core? It does have twice the the L2 cache, 64-bit tech, and the pentium dual core is named pentium D and this one is the celeron D. Where did you find out that it wasn't a dual core? Give me the link.

Ya no such thing as a celeron dual core. They named it celron d to confuse you.

the d doesn't actually mean decent(i added that) its really doesn't have a meaning intel just added it to the end to differentiate it from the old northwood celerons that really sucked. the difference between it and the old celeron is, 533mhz FSB and 256k L2 cache (and based on the Prescott core and not the northwood). some also have the option for 64 bit extensions (3x1) or excute disable bit (3xxJ)

well my mistake. oops. I looked on the intel site before and i could have sworn i saw that the celerons were dual core but i guess my eyes decieved me. Thank you for setting me strait. I always want to know as much as i can and have it be right. so thank you.

It's called Decent because the previous Celeron was so bad - the whole lot of them were creamed by the 1800 Duron. And one deals with TigerDirect at one's own risk... Check in the ForSale/Trade section here first. Next look at the refurbs at geeks.com or eBay.
. IAC, you may want to head on over to BestBuy and pick up the monitor they have on sale this week for $79. after rebate (if you don't like that, check what the other big box stores have this week). I don't care to pay shipping on something as big and heavy as a CRT monitor.

For buying new, a Dell anything will beat the 90 Mhz to pieces and have future downloads and support avaliable. The AOL machine is $450 to $500 out the door with one year "free" AOL included. With the AOL installed you will be going toward 90 Mhz performance in no time .

For lowest cost, I'm sure someone in the Church has an "old" machine in the >1 Ghz area that they don't use anymore. These days people throw out 1.5 Ghz machines and 17" monitors routinely, which will be very servicable to the Church .

You could still provide the labor to reformat and set it up. Of course , this would make you the support guy , but it sounds like you already are.
