Looking for a card that will do 1920x1200 gaming with high detail

Budget? Other specs? What kind of games do you play? How long do you plan on using your new card before upgrading?
 
budget roughly $200, planning on a P5q-E/Q9550 and 8GB ram setup.

I play mostly FPS and also GTA4. Would want this to last a while before upgrade.
 
the 4870's are suppose to be pretty nice

they say the 1 gig version is the hot sh*t right now if you can afford it though - sounds like the extra mem really helps when you start bumpin up the res.

the gig version of that sapphire is goin for 239.99 right now.

the gtx 260's are not a bad option if your leanin nvidia, slightly less power consumption than the competing ati cards, though according to Anand, the 4870 is a bit quicker in most of the benchmarks
 
what board? if you're going dual card just get a 4870X2.

It blows away almost anything at 1920 and while its similar to 2 4870s its a bit cheaper

BTW though, if you can wait until the next GTX release the prices should drop.

Yes, you want an awful lot for very little; there is no single card (close to your price range) that will do 1920x1200 gaming with high detail
--if you mean playing the newest PC games' settings completely maxed out and with minimal AA+16xAF, then you want GTX280 or 4870x2😛

And you are asking a LOT for $200
- your best shot is 4870/1GB or a GTX260(+); maybe when the new cards come out, you can get one for that price

No, but when a new product is released more often than not, the previous product lines shift down in price. He may be able to pick up a GTX260 for around $200 once the new ones are released and available in quantity.
 
Sounds like you guys are steering me a a good direction, as eager as I am to upgrade my P4 system, waiting for the next gen Video cards might be payoff for me on the current ones.
I was also thinking get one 4870 now and then make it into a crossfire setup when the prices for it drop, thoughts on that strategy ? Am I better off with crossfire setup or a single X2 4870 ?

And are the aTI drivers more reliable these days, I remember in my 9700 days the machine would crassh and blue screen alot if the drivers were not installed jsut right.

You could get two of these Gigabyte HD 4870s for $165 each after mail-in rebate (and you'd get two free gaming mice... mouses?) and crossfire those for $330, as opposed to one 4870x2 for ~$500.

I'm trying to figure out what card setup I'm going with so I can order my new build. I'm extremely far from an expert though so others' opinions on this option would be appreciated, but as far as I know Gigabyte is a reliable and quality manufacturer.

There's no such thing as drivers "installed just right". Either they're installed or they aren't, crashing is due to driver conflict or just bad drivers in general. Current drivers are fine, I haven't had any trouble with either ATI nor Nvidia's drivers.

I'd go for a GTX260 if I were in your shoes though.
