Looking for a backpack...

I'm looking for something to hold both a laptop and two external hard drives, without the hard drives being beside each other... meaning that they would be above and below each other, but still sitting on their sides. There don't seem to be any bags that have a higher compartment large enough that I could stick the 2nd drive in. Any ideas? I know it sounds lame, but I've already busted up one of my externals from storing it too closely to another.

Yeah, no. Not enough padding for any of the equipment being put in. No one knows of a specific hard drive backpack, or even soft case? Help!

Have you gone to the web sites of the Big Box office supply stores or visited the ones in your town? They usually have some interesting backpacks designed for carrying notebook PCs etc. Your local CompUSA, Fry's or MicroCenter will have some too. They will often have items like that that don't appear on their web sites and moreso at "back to school" time in the late Summer. You'll find the ones that didn't sell in the clearance bins after that time. CompUSA has 200 notebook carrying cases on their web site!

Maybe you could hang a couple of these on your normal backpack. Or you could use a bungee cord to keep the drive separated within a single compartment - or cut up a cheap exercise pad to make separators. Use a little imagination - I forgot, today's youth doesn't have that anymore... .bh.

Check with Spire, not the psu company, there is a company called Spire as well that just makes all sorts of laptop bags..

I personally own the Spire Zoom, and I can attest to the quality of it, it is excellent with lots of padding and pockets...

Something like Crumpler's "Sinking Barge" backpack might work for what you need. It's a combination laptop/photography backpack, and has a compartment with movable padded dividers (they attach to the walls with Velcro) that you could use to keep your externals safely apart from each other (picture). It's a little pricey, like all of Crumpler's stuff, but it's worth checking out their website: http://www.crumplerbags.com .

It would probably be a good idea to tell us what your budget is and how big your laptop is, though.
