I'm waiting for the next generation Pioneer plasma's to be released this year.
I am too, but the new 50" Pioneers aren't going to be under $2000.

That's pretty much certain. I have a budget of up to $3k so it might work out.

I'm betting the new 50" will be at least $5K given that the Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 is still around the $5K mark. I don't think the new Pioneer 50" plasma will be at the $3K mark until next year at the least. But hey, I would LOVE to be wrong. :)

Agreed. There's no way the new 8th generation Pioneers are going to come in under $3k.

I'm also very interested to see the new Samsung 81-series LCD panels (the ones with dynamic LED backlighting) but I fully expect those to be similarly out of my budget.

You can most likely get PPV with cable cards too, you just can't order it through your TV. You can call in or use the web site of your provider most likely. Cable cards will be great until SDV starts going crazy.

The one nice advantage to a box if you want DVR, otherwise there isn't an advantage.

Im convinced that some of the Samsung DLP's are the ebst "affordable" 1080P HDTV's available...

Samsung DLP HL-S5087W

Not a plasma.

You dont shop for a plasma when you have a budget of less than 4K.

You have no idea what you're talking about. You can get a gorgeous 50" Pioneer plasma that slaps around 99% of all the HDTVs out now for ~$2200.
