Looking for a 50" plasma ... suggestions and current deals?

I've finally decided to chuck my old college tv and get a new one. Given my living room size, about 8-10ft of viewing distance, I'm thinking of getting a 50" plasma.

I checked the typical sites and seems like the best so far is the Samsung 5033 $1477.

Is this my best bet right now? The only thing is that I have to buy it online, not sure how much of a hassle it would be if I run into any problems.

hoping to stay around the $1500-$1800 ... not sure if that's do-able or not. But seeing the prices at frys.com, I hope so. 🙂
 
Check out the phillips outlet store.Alot of times they will knock $200-$300 off on a refurb.So you might be looking at around $1100 for a 50 inch.Prices go down every day on these things
 
Supposed to be a decent plasma. This one is similar to the HPS5053 but does not have the filter bright screen (cuts down on reflections), game mode and the speakers aren't hidden.

But for under $1500 you probably won't find a better deal. I bought a 50" Panny in back in Dec. for $1699 but that was after pricematching and a $300 off HD deal...prices just keep on dropping. Right now you can get a 50" Panny for $1999 from stores like CC, & BB but I don't think the $500+ difference is worth it.

Go for the Samsung, I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Another vote for Panasonic. I spent around 4k a little over a year ago for this 50". The mdl with the cable card will cost you about $500.00 more. It's dropped in price significantly from a year ago. Just checked CC and the prices are......

42" ---- $1,500
50" ---- $2,000 (no cable card capability)

I'm sure you can find cheaper prices elsewhere but for those of us that like to buy local and can easily return an item, it's a better route.

I vote for Panny too. I have the 42" Panny and its amazing. The 50" Panny has been down to $16xx recently so you can wait for it to drop again. The new models are here and everyone is trying to clear out the inventory.
 
Why would you even want a cable card ready TV? Your spending more $$ for nothing. You won't get as many channels and features...ex:With a cable box you get on demand(movies,music,etc...) your onscreen TV guide and alot of HD channels. Your paying more for a feature that will give you less channels.

Not so much. Panasonic plasmas are the best bang for you buck, but not the best. VERY nice plasmas though.

As for the best deal going on plasmas, I'd say this is it. And if you can spend a little extra, I'd say this is even better.

I am too, but the new 50" Pioneers aren't going to be under $2000.

That's pretty much certain. I have a budget of up to $3k so it might work out.

I'm betting the new 50" will be at least $5K given that the Pioneer Elite PRO-FHD1 is still around the $5K mark. I don't think the new Pioneer 50" plasma will be at the $3K mark until next year at the least. But hey, I would LOVE to be wrong. 🙂
 
hrmm, tell me if I understand this correctly ... with a plasma with an integrated tuner. I can plug the tv in and start watching hd from the off the air signals right? Would it make any sense to get cable then would the signals from the provider better than that over the air? Just wondering if I would need the qam tuner if the cable co. does not provide the set top box.

With the cablecard, I can get all channels except PPV which I do not want. I can get all HD and premium channels such as HBO etc and there's no need for a crappy, slow channel changing BOX! 🙂

I like channel surfing fast. With a box, it's damn "MOLEASSES" slow! Plus I save about $4.-5. a mth not needing to rent a stb. (set top box/cable box)


PS----- Most people don't know you can get all the channels with the cablecard. I did some reading up before buying my tv then called the cable company to check up on it............Guess they did'nt know either and kept telling me I was wrong and would need a box to recieve HD. When they came out to install the card and set everything up, I told them about the customer service and what they told me and they laughed **LOL**

With an intergrated tuner, you still need to subscribe to the service from your cable company. Digital + HD tier, etc. So you will need a stb or cable card. Like I said, the only main thing you lose with a cablecard is PPV/On Demand.
If you want to recieve HD without cable or a stb, you will need an outside antenna to recieve free over the air HD.
