To make a long story short, bought system with extended plan, system crapped out, I got full $500 purchase price back in store credit, so I very much prefer to buy at Circuit City. Looking to spend around the same amount of money.

The original system was an entry level home theatre in a box product, the Sony DDW420 I believe. It's a well outdated product nowadays. The sound quality and features was more than good enough for my parents' purposes.

I do not need DVD player, VCR, etc. I do need receiver, speakers + subwoofer, remote. I do need Dolby Digital support, and if possible Pro Logic II support for a Gamecube.

I would prefer a Sony model if possible for easier remote compatibility. It doesn't need to be a HTIAB, the receiver and speakers can be seperate.

Edit: I don't want anything white. Black or cherry is fine, the 'rents are color conscious.

I purchased an Onkyo theater in a box system - got it online because it was cheaper than the box stores,
But, I believe Circuit City may have had it -
I *think* it was Onkyo HTS 650. I can't even remember what I paid for it, except that I got such a good deal that I had to wait nearly 2 1/2 months while it was backordered. Personally, I love the system.

Thanks a million Mrchad. A question:

How does the Onkyo SR303 compare to the 503 as well as the Sony 598 and 698? And the all in 1 box you linked to, how can I tell the receiver model included to compare it to standalone products?

I checked cnet, and the Onkyo 502 got a buyers award.

Not sure about the SR303 vs. the 503, but for the most part Onkyo's are going to be better bets than Sony in the same price range. I wouldn't recommend Sony unless you are talking about their mid-range ES line.

I don't know what receiver comes with the HTIAB model, but its specs look good.

That's what I had in mind to recommend when I came into the thread.

Cnet claims that the receiver in that HTIAB is the same as the 503

So how does the Onkyo HTS780 package compare to the 503
+ one of these speaker packages?

The 3 options I see are the Sherwood ST4108, the Sony SAVE367T, and the Infinity with the Cherry finish linked to earlier in the thread.

Looks like the infinity package and the onkyo are going to put you over budget a bit. Might be worth it. Why not go into Circuit city with your parents and decide what you like?

So you don't have any of your original HTIB anymore, right?

Another receiver to look at would be the Panasonic XR-55... oops, sold out.

Because I'm not at home until Thanksgiving and I have to choose a product and advise over the net.

I have none of the original HTIAB anymore, the entire thing went back to CC.

Well, since it sounds like they care about appearance, maybe tell them about the Onkyo HTIB and the receiver/infinity deals and have them go in and see what they like the looks and sound of.
They would likely be happy with either set. I know my parents sure would be.
