forget street figher. good god, someone FINALLY mentioned MBR! personally i think its one of best games ever made for computers, period.

Am I missing something, or is MBR only available in japanese and only run on systems in the japan region with japanese fonts installed ?

That's the impression I got flicking through FAQs, and it seems an awful lot of hoops to jump through to end up with something where you can't read the menus.

How can you not like a game where one of the characters is a umbrella toting man in a lounge suit with a paper bag over his head, and another is a young girl in a sailor costume that smacks people over the head with a boat anchor 3x her size ? ;p

all you have to do is just changing one setting in control panel, and you are set. install, run the game and enjoy. As a member of a techy forum, you shouldnt have any problem whatsoever. dont remember any "awful lot of hoops" and whoever is experiencing that is doing something terribly unrelated and wrong.

Menus are in plain english, except for settings (which you might fiddle with for the first time running) and the story mode. I thought you were looking for a fighting game, so thats a non-issue here.

It may be a tad bit more hassle than console's insert-and-play, but sure is rewarding. case in point, my roomate - a very skilled and seasoned street fighter player - says he cant go back to street fighter after being spoiled by MBR. street fighter felt too slow and boring to him after the whole experience of killing each other for hours and hours of fun 😀

The first few hoops are finding somewhere that sells it, and then getting scalped on shipping costs.

My post was not a complaint though, but a question - and I take it the answer is that, yes, there is no english version available, and yes you can't install it unless you also install eastern language support, install japanese fonts, and change your windows regional settings to japanese.

That is kind of a relief - the links you provided mention that there is an unofficial english menu hack for the original version, but not for react. Perhaps they are out of date.

As a random question - why *are* the menus in plain english if it's a japanese game and none of the rest of it is ?

Right, there is no english version. I admit getting the game could be somewhat harder for you and I didnt take that into account, since I got my copy when I went home for last winter break. Adding easter language support is a breeze, and that will take care of japanese fonts. I have always installed fresh english versions of windows and not once I remember having to add japanese fonts seperately with my slew of japanese bishoujo games and all. you do NOT have to change regional settings to japanese; what you want to do instead is changing "Language for non-unicode programs" to japanese. Sorry if I sound being nitpicky on techinicality, but there is a huge difference : changing this setting does not incur any inconvinience for your other daily use of the computer unlike changing the whole regional setting. In the end, if you have a legal copy of windows, it really is a one step process that may take you anywhere between 5 to 15 minutes including a couple of swift reboots.

my guess is that the developers might have felt it would be "cool" to use english here and there, not an unusual practice, really. In case you do get to try the game, you will get a dose of some even cooler "engrish" floating around in the background while the game loads up 😛

EDIT : I will correct myself, the first screen that appears is a mix of japanese and english, which reads "VS mode." From there on, however, you get to choose between <vs human, vs com, replay>, which brings up either character select screen or replay screen. Everything from there is pretty much self-explanatory and labeled in english like "1 player side", "player color is 1st." Once you get in the game, you will see all the gauges in english, and even the announcements of wins and losses are in engrish! 😀 If my totally ABC roomate with zero background in japanese can get this perfectly straight , i dont see why anyone else wouldnt. then again, the story mode is a whole different story. Type-Moon lterature is known to be very heavy on allusions and rhetoric as you can readily notice from Fate/Stay Night demo translated to English (google if interested, highly recommended)

Why is it that all these games u guys recommend have these ""LIttle " anime girls inthem.. like not even full grown.. "does this fall into the cat of Japanese culture obsessing over VERY young women??" JUST A THOUGHT,, no offense AT ALLL

to answer you shortly, yes. no offense taken, and fine if you dont find them too attractive. I guess it goes both ways, since we (as in asian gamers, otakus, whatever you call it) get completely flabbergasted by some of american portrayal of women in games, comics etc (i.e. superwoman and wonderwoman, ugh).

as for why they have characters from anime/gyaruge, the whole point of these games are paying homage to some massively popular series and coming up with good parodies so the fans of original material could connect with it. With the exception of MBR, all other listed games are doujin work, meaning they arent really interested how well their game sells due to no commercial intent; rather, they are just doing it purely out of their respect and enthusiasm toward the original. Another thing is, they are using charcters from some of the most popular stuff (Tsukihime, Fate/Stay Night, Di gi charat, Kanon, Air, To Heart and so on). you gotta admit, if they made a game out of some random unpopular/never-heard-of characters, games like x-men vs street fighter would have never been so popular in the US. these games are designed for japanese gamer market, and naturally they incorporate characters well known to the local market. Most people there probably dont really know much or care to learn about x-men, but Fate/stay night sold out on the day of its realese. It just so happens that watanabe studio is one of the leading 2d fighting game developers, and other doujin groups are also very creative and ingenious at what do. PC is a great platform for non-commercial projects as it really doesnt impose as much financial overhead as the console counterparts do. They could develop a neat little game without worries of staying profittable.

personally, i believe that its not matter of how young they actually are; its more of how much we differ in gauging how young a person is or should be judging by appearance. i say there is about 5-10 years gap in what we see. in other words, if i post a pic of some asian celebrity, most people here would guess her age younger by 5-10 years. if i post a pic of some western celebrity in her 20s, people back home would think shes well past her 30.
