Looking for 2- 20" monitors to complete my setup

Here is my rig

That said, I'm looking at the new Gateway 30" monster, but I also want dual 20" monitors to flank either side of my 30" monitor.

Both will be in landscape and both MUST have a native resolution of 1600x1200 (to match up w/ the 30" monitor).

Neither will be used for gaming...that will be the sole territory of the 30". These will be used for extra real estate while playing online poker, as well as day-to-day internet/computer usage.

Ideally, I'm looking something in the $200-$300 range (if not cheaper) and am willing to listen to all suggestions.

If you are going with the HP 30" the 20" HP LCD (LP2065) should look good on both sides of that 30". Unfortunately it's more than $300.

Do you mean portrait mode so you have a 4960x1600 desktop?

Landscape wouldn't match much of anything 😕

Not as cheap as you want, but really, i doubt you'll find any new LCDs that can do 1600x1200 for cheap, since they're mostly all S-IPS or S-PVA panels (which is what you want, but costs more 😛).

Also, if it is indeed portrait mode you want, you'll want to find some that pivot; not sure about the Dells.
(Unless you're using some LCD arms or something.)

And you gotta be kidding me? WTF are they so damn expensive whereas a 22" WS is half that?!?

Are the S-IPS and S-PVA my only options? Man, that is quite frustrating if so....



What other options do I have then that would look good?
 
The 2001FP is old though and looks lousy by modern standards. That LP2065 might be your best bet in terms of price. The 4:3 monitors are all expensive these days, maybe due to low volume.

So it's basically 4 choices:

Dell 2001FP

Samsung 204B (TN panel which worries me seeing as it will be in portrait)

Samsung 204T (which seem to be the cheapest and most widely available...thoughts here?)

HP LP2065


Gonna search for reviews/prices....

204B has worst viewing angles I have seen on a LCD... it even affects your regular viewing.

As for three screens, are you sure that you don't have to upgrade your eyees too to get another pair of them? cuz at work I barely can follow two 19".
 
The 2001FP is old, but I certainly would not call it bad. I have a 2007FP, an LG2000C, and regularly use a 2001FP. They are all S-IPS 4:3 panels, and I cannot see any difference in IQ as far as color quality and sharpness. I do not game on these monitors, so I cannot comment on motion blurring. I would take the 2001FP over the majority of the garbage TN-based monitors, and a good number of VA panels, depending on the manufacturer and intended application.

You absolutely do not want a TN panel. The horrific vertical viewing angles will be all the more apparent when you rotate the displays into portrait mode. Not to mention that the shortcomings of TN panels with respect to color reproduction will be highlighted when run next to a quality S-IPS display.

Pricewise, the 2001FP is by far the easiest to swallow. The only concern, of course, is that you are unlikely to find NOS, and used models will almost certainly be out of warranty. Then again, at $200 each, you can purchase three for less than the price of two 2007FPs (or the HP)- in that case, even if one dies in a year or so, you still come out ahead money-wise.

And I can grab two used 2001FP's off of ebay for a total less than $500. Thoughts? Worth it, even though they're older models?

As has been mentioned here, that will look terrible.

Viewing angles are utterly horrifying when using TN in portrait.

I would know.
I use my S-PVA 204T alongside my 3007WFP.
Looks & works amazingly.

I use a 204B (TN) in portait mode for my secondary PC also.
Looks terrible. Color shifting is enough to make me want to gouge me eyes out.

I see nothing wrong with grabbing some 204Ts or 2001FPs off eBay 🙂
Sure, they're not spectacular for response times, but you're not using them for gaming or watching movies on obviously.
They'd do the job very nicely.

I did pull the trigger on the two 2001FP's off of ebay. Combined I got them both w/ shipping for $430.

Got those two bad boys setup this weekend and wow, they're bigger than I thought they'd be.

The picture on both is fantastic and no dead pixels. I'm thrilled w/ my choice. Thanks for all the help, fellas.

Now, once I withdraw more money out of my poker account, I can buy/build the rest of the rig to go with them!
 
Monitors look great! Keep us up to date on the build.

A bit off-topic, but how are you finding the competition now that the poker craze has died down a bit? Are the fish still juicy?

Well, I play on Full Tilt which is generally accepted as the "toughest" site to play on. Second would be Poker Stars.

Since the UIGEA went into effect, Average Joe has, for the most part, assumed (incorrectly) that online poker is illegal...it isn't. But the competition HAS gotten tougher, no doubt, but there are plenty of monkeys that pay my bills 🙂
