Speakers are subjective, but B&W are some of the best sounding speakers I've ever heard.

I would go with the Axioms, as for the price, not many speakers can compete. But if you're willing to spend more, like for the B&W, you might want to consider the Paradigm Studio 20's.......I think i saw a person selling a pair for $300 on audiogon, just earlier.

Either way, hope you're happy with whatever you get, good luck

build 'em yourself ;) You can get some very well done bookshelf speakers for $300/pair if you build them yourself :)

find somebody with a table saw and a router and make your own enclosure.
dont buy a kit, just find some plans online, and follow those instructions.

some basic plans
ask viperoni, he's really good with this stuff ;)

then it'll be very easy for you to make the crossover ;) hell just have somebody else cut up the MDF for ya, it's fairly simple :)

I have the B&W 303's and they are great little speakers. If you go to a good audio store and get more than just one set of speakers, chances are they'll give you some sort of discount. I bought 2 pairs of 303's, the matching center and a definitive tech sub and they knocked 10-20% off each piece.

EDIT: The best thing to do is make a CD of stuff you listen to, go to an audio store with them setup and listen to your CD. And if you can watch a DVD, do that too.

Stats and reviews are nice, but speaker components are highly subjective and the only way to find what you like is to listen to them.

B&Ws no question.

I've got B&W bookshelf speakers and the only speakers that came close to those that I heard were Celestions (which I had but blew out). B&Ws have very good bass response whereas the Celestions had better tweeters but they were 2 completely different types of speakers (bass reflex vs acoustic suspension).

One question though, they most likely use some ungodly priced equipment for demoing and that's going to be very different from what I use at home. Do they allow you to take speakers home and try it in your own setup?

The place I bought mine from had about 6 different receivers, a few different CD players and DVD players from the different price ranges. Most stores know that the 303's are entry level and pair it with the respective audio equipment. Its not like the 303's are some $10k/pair speakers and need some $40k pre-amp/receiver/amp setup to power it.

And some places do let you trial components so you can see what it sounds like on your system. Never hurts to ask.
