Looking at cameras

P&S cameras are nice and convenient to carry, but those DSLRs take nicer pictures. Should I be considering a micro Four thirds system camera? It seems to me that, if I have to lug around a lens anyway, I might as well go for a DSLR. Thoughts?

As someone who is relatively new in photography, I thoroughly enjoy my GF1 plus it's outstanding 20mm prime kit lens. It's a good crossover between a P&S and a DSLR. It's comparatively small and convenient to carry while still having a powerful sensor. I don't regret at all getting a m4/3 camera over a traditional DSLR.
 
Take a look at the new Lumix GH2. A digital version of the good old R/F 35mm with a 4/3 format. Uses Leica lenses - no mirror.
 
Well... What type of pictures or scenarios are u most likely to experience? What do u enjoy shooting? Any particular brand loyalty? Is the size the most important factor? What else is important to u in choosing? What is your budget? Etc.
 
Canon PS S95 work well for me.

What important in photography is know your equipment well, and work with it. Then, framing and lighting.
 
Today, I recommend the Nikon D7000 for anyone in the price range. It's a great camera and is just a plain joy to work with. Hard to find. It was always out of stock, even before the issues in Japan. They sell as quickly as they get in stock, for good reason.

Not full frame. I'm waiting for the next D700 to upgrade.

Get the refurb from Adorama. $1169, body only. It's only $30 off the new price, but it is in stock. Try it out and return it if you don't love it.

Agreed! However it is pretty pricey. If u can afford it u won't regret it... The camera is amazing.
 
I love my Sony Nex-5. It is the smallest mirrorless option available with DSLR like pictures because of it's huge sensor.
 
I love my GF1 combo. Mostly because of weight and size. It just really depends on your priorities. Some will say a t3i is small enough. I would disagree with my GF1+20. But then a lot of folks don't like having a single prime (the 14-45 is pretty compact to bring along as well, or grab a 14mm pancake instead).

If you don't care about the weight, but just the fact you have to carry a lens anyway? then grab a DSLR.
 
Canon SX130 - takes pictures up to 12 megapixel, films in 1080HD video, 12X optical zoom, takes AA batteries,, bigger then your usual point and shoot, but smaller then your average DSLR.

I picked the SX130 because it takes AA batteries, HD video and the 12x zoom, but without the bulk of the DSLR.

I love my K7, but I couldn't possibly recommend it over the K5 due to the sensor...despite the cost. For learning purposes there's both the k-x and k-r, which are more targeted to beginners anyway; and still cheaper with lenses than the k7.
