Looking at buying a 2004 jeep GC overland *found one*

Found one.

Ended up finding a super clean one. It's totally chromed out though which I'll have to remedy. The previous owner was obviously into the bling, but you can tell he sure kept good care of it.

Funny you should ask, I drive an 04 WJ Limited w/ options very similar to the Overland trim. I don't have the UC package, Nav or adjustable pedals, other than that I'm pretty much optioned like a Overland. I have about 145,xxx miles on the clock and just had the CEL come on. I must preface this by stating that the Jeep has been reliable over the 5 years I've owned it. Only non maintenance items that have gone bad are the alternator and this CEL, which sounds like a speed input/output sensor. Things to watch out for though are bad/failing rubber seals (look at the door pieces) and if the interior lights turn off with the car or that the windows/sunroof work. There is a common failure in the drivers wiring harness where the ground cable will snap, causing the light/window error. I took mine to a car audio place to run a new wire and voila, problem solved (albeit, after I attempted a fix with butt connectors & a soldering gun).
You can easily check for fault codes by turning the key to the AC position (where dash lights come on) and then off 3 times within 5 seconds. Leave it in the AC position after the third attempt and you will see a Pxxxx number on the odometer. That is your fault code. If none show up, then no CEL! Please note, this is the first CEL I've experienced with this Jeep. I don't want to scare you away, but the Jeep is almost 10 years old, so things are going to start falling apart on you.
Before I forget, there is another common failure on Jeeps of this era where the blend doors on the dual zone climate control fails. All this means is that you don't get dual zone anymore, whatever the driver temp reading is, is what you'll get on the passenger side as well. I have not had this problem yet w/ mine though. Head over to WJJeeps.com for tons of reading. There is a very active forum called JeepForum (as well as others) where you can find anything out you want.

PSS wanna buy mine?

Nice reply. I've been reading tons in the past few days about this. In fact last week I test drove an 03 overland that only had 58k miles. It seemed to run great but it had the blend door failure. I also just couldn't help but feel like it hasn't been maintained very well and has been neglected (despite the low miles). The struts for the hood and rear window didn't work and there was some major sun fading going on between the wipers and the hood. Besides that though it felt great. I fell in love with that 4.7 HO V8. Anyway the dealer wanted 10.5k but I feel like I didn't want to pay more than 9k for it. I told the sales guy I just wasn't completely sold on it yet and he turned into a dick and said somebody else already put down a deposit and if I don't buy it IMMEDIATELY then it's gone. I said well sell it to that guy then. Here we are a week later and it's still sitting on their lot. If he wasn't such a doucle to me I probably would have gone back by now to buy it, but I'm restrained out of principle.

Tomorrow I'm going to look at 2 or 3 other overlands I found with 130-150k and see what kind of condition they're in comparatively.

I still am so torn on getting one though. I hate chrysler and can't stand their vehicles. I don't trust them one bit. Right now I have a practically brand new trouble free 2012 mustang but the family is growing and I need 4 doors, so my thought is I'll sell the stang for ~$17k, pay off the 10k I owe on it and use the remainder to buy a semi fun 4 door vehicle that hopefully will survive for 3 or 4 years and then hopefully sell it for slightly less than what I paid for. My dad and brother has a wrangler and goes jeeping all the time so it would be fun to go out with them as well.

I also want to get rid of the car payment. I pay 450/month and have 2 years left. My thought process is if I can get out of these payments and will have to pay a few $1000 repair bills over the course of the next few years to keep the jeep running, that's a hell of a lot less than 10k. Also that jeep with the V8 was just as much fun to drive as my mustang. That V8 with AWD is addictive and felt like a rocket ship.

2" rubicon express suspension lift with 265 tires. Paid $8k.

Cars with autozone add-ons almost invariably come with deferred maintenance. I would've passed.
His logbook going back to 2004 stating every single thing including oil changes and the date he put on the chrome window sills says differently. The autocheck matches everything perfectly. I'm not worried.

It's all about the records, and it looks like you have that covered. Nice vehicle. And nice to know that you're going to de-bling it. I just don't get the cheapy plastic bolt-on crap either.

But it's actually got a hemi...

What, you've never heard of the ultra rare 2003 overland with the HEMI preview? I totally called the guy out on the badge and he's like "nobody would ever know it's not a hemi by the sound and pull of it". And I'm thinking yeah except for every Jeep aficionado in the known universe that will think you're a total poser. Which where I live is most everybody.

After driving both the 4.0 and the 4.7 HO there was no way I could get one with the 4.0. Especially coming from a mustang I need me some V8 power. Besides I wanted an overland which only comes with the 4.7 HO. I'll bet I'm going to drive this for 5 years and only put 40k miles on it and be able to sell it for nearly what I bought it for.

It's actually quicker than the current GC Hemi by a good bit. If it's in good shape, it will walk smartly away from a 2014 GC Hemi from a stoplight.

These things are shockingly quick and the power is instant. I hear a lot of hemi owners complaining about throttle lag and it really takes away from the seat of your pants feel which the HO has in spades. It also helps that the WJ is significantly lighter. When you gas it from a stop it seriously feels like you can nearly break out all 4 tires in a spin.

I have an 08 Hemi, and it's significantly lighter than the current version as well.

I was disappointed to learn that if I bought a newer one, it would be slower, despite the addition of variable cam timing.

Just crack the ECM to solve the problem 😛

However, there will go the warranty on the EDM and engine and possibly the vehicle.
