Lookin for a decent notebook....

Just as it says. I don't want it to do everything my home pc can. Nor do I want DVD on it(what a waste!) Price range that I am lookin at is $1,000 -> $1,500. Any reccomendations on brands to stay away from? To lean towards? I have never owned a notebook, but my fiance needs it for school and I will be going to school when she is done. Any suggestions would be very helpful, and if you need any more 411 let me know.
