lookin at buying a SATA controller card

Firstly, try to avoid promise controllers. They suck so much ass. I have not had plesent experiences with them. Secondly, do you need RAID functionality?

no not really. maybe a raid 1 setup, but not much more than that. i would setup my home file server to run raid 5 but that's only a possibility.
Or maybe run two stripe sets and mirror them. is this possible? would that require four drives of equal size?

hrmmm.

and fire 400, I'm not running any pci x gear.

specs are as follows:
amd athlon xp 1500+
2 x 80gb drives
1 x 200gb (looking to get one maybe two more since their fairly cheap now.)

well from what I hear, some PCI-x cards are backwards compatible with the PCI slots we have today. you just have to find a vendor that supports a PCI add-in

I know SATA cards with a PCI-X interface that will still fit into a standard PCI bus at autodetect.
