I just picked up a combo for myself, being in that same situation. I did a lot of reading, and decided on the Gigabyte 7VRXP. It's in the roundup at Tom's:)P), and scores very well. Plus it has a whole bunch of features that very few other KT333 boards all have in one. It cost me $175CND.
I owned Intel before, and had virtually NO clue about AMD chipsets, other than that KT333 and Nvidia's were two of the best. It's basically a crap shoot, trying to decide. :)

Good roundup of KT333 boards here, all the favourites there. ,you don`t say what features you need like RAID etc.

If you don`t need official PC2700 RAM support then the Epox 8KHA+ is a rock stable board based on the older VIA KT266A chipset.

Yo,

For KT333 boards:

1. Gigabyte 7VRXP - stable, good benchmarks, decent overclocking abilities, lots of features (usb 2.0, promise raid, onboard lan, creative ct5880 sound), vcore 1.925V max, AGP 1.80V max.
2. Epox 8K3A+ - fastest, massive overclockability, Vcore 2.2 V MAX!!! VDimm 3.2V MAX, highpoint raid.

I recently help my friend pick out parts for a new computer i'm gonna help him build. He bought the 1800+ XP and I recommended the Gigabyte 7VRXP because he's gonna be OCing too much and the 7VRXP offers more features than the 8K3A+.

For KT266A boards... I hear the Soltek 75DRV4 is supposed to be a fantastic board. I have the EPOX 8KHA+ and I like it a lot. Very fast, good OC capabilities but it's picky about power. You really need a good power supply. MY antec 300W is really not cutting it.

There is a special at newegg on both of these Soltek boards, you might want to check them out.

SOLTEK SL-75DRV4 (Purple Ray Ver.) VIA KT266A
SOLTEK SL-75DRV5 (Purple Ray) VIA KT333

I have the 75DRV4 myself and can vouch for it. I am running a 1700 XP and have great stability, I don't think it has crashed once in over a month. Just read the reviews that people at newegg give it, it has 5 stars with 52 votes. Note that you will have to have DDR ram. :)

i'm in the market for an athlon board also; it is true, though, that getting pc2700/ddr333 memory for an athlon is not worth is, considering the throughput for an athlon tops off at 266?

is it worth to spend extra for that ddr333, let alone for future board reasons?

That it is... very stable, and fast.. and it overlocks well. all 5 of my PCI slots are full, and zero problems, no compatibility problems, nothing. stable and fast flawless performance. i'd buy Soltek again, any day!!!!!!

How about the Shuttle AK35GTR KT266A? I've read some really great stuff about it. It's also got 5 stars on newegg.com w/ 72 votes. This is the one I went for myself. I think it should be here tomorrow! WHEE! :)

I was going to get the Epox 8hka+, but I started finding some bad raps on it. Dunno if they are legit or not, but there are apparently some problems with it. I'm a first time builder and so it seemed the Shuttle would be nice. It also fits the heatsink I wanted to get, the Thermalright AX-7. I wanted to try putting an enermax manually adjustable fan on it... so I can overclock when I want to, and be quiet when I want to. I also plan on modding a case w/ 4 case fans. Should be a good experience :)

I have a Soltek SL-75DRV4 board and it works great, and you can get a newer revision now too(the 75DRV5).
The Nforce boards do offer alot though. You can have integrated video, audio, nic, all in one and they are stable as well. The price of them has lowered too and if you don't want to have the integrated video you can always get the 415 chipset board which has everything else except video. For the all in one boards, this is definitely worth a look.

yes i am looking at the asus A7N266C which uses the 415 chipset; its about 100 dollars right now and seems like a pretty good value. I hear the sound is great also.
