i just installed a windows xp home, but i still have my old files on my pc when i had windows xp pro. i had a password protected user account, so i want to get into the old files that i had in the "document and settings" folder, but it always says access denied.

is there anyway to get around this?

Why did you go from XP Pro to home?!
Anyway, log on as an administrator and try it. Maybe install Pro and try as an admin.
If that doesn't work, all I can say is that it's never a good idea to downgrade.

i had to because i only had the home cd. couldnt find my pro disc. i am logged on as an admin..still cant get in

up

edit: i reinstalled OS bc i switched mobos and pro wouldnt work no more

Best I can do is bump and maybe somebody can help
Or go to the OS Forum ...you can get software that will decrypt the asteric symbols or find the passwords...not willing to search for you but it's out there.

Try creating a username on the new install that is identical and uses the same password as you had on the Pro setup. Also make sure the new setup has the same computer name and workgroup name.

I really have no idea if this will work, but it's easy and worth a try.

you are certain it is the account password that is tripping you up... not encrypted files with password protection? (If the latter is the case you are SOL)
