well within the 1st block of my run i got this excrutiating pain in my back that went away for the rest of my run. when i got home my back hurt like hell again and still does(over 3+hours since my run). needless to say i decided to look in a mirror and it seems that my spine does not go 100%straight up. there seems to be a slight curve lasting maybe 5 inches right below the neck before it lines up again with my lower part of the spine. is this normal to have a slight curve in your spine or should it always be 100%straight?

It's called something like 'lordosis' where your back isn't straight but bends to one side.

Sure, it can. I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was 14. It wasn't that big of a deal for me. I acutally ended up running cross country and track in high school with no real problems. You should probably go get some xrays done to find out how bad it is. Sometimes scoliosis patients need back braces or surgery (extreme cases only).

Also, it usually doesn't get worse after you are done officially "growing"...although I assume that once you start getting really old it can get worse again.

when was the last time you had a physical?
i believe scoliosis checks should be routinely done when you have a physical.

Yeah. I've got it really bad. I'm gonna have to have surgery on it later in life, but I'm putting it off. I can't sit up straight or else it kills me. No one notices though, really, because I'm 6' 3" hunched over...it just reminds some people of neandertal man...

Curved left/right? Or curved out? I got a hunchback from slouching all the time, it's never bothered me.

HA! Lordosis is the position a female (rats, mice, etc as far as i know) assumes before being mounted. Its a sign that she is receptive. :Q

This could possibly be due to slouching in a computer chair while holding the mouse.

Try standing straight and have someone from behind check to see if your elbows are at the same height.

maybe, except i dont slouch, but i dont think would that also explain the horrible pain whenever i even slouch forward slightly. lol this is getting annoying having to do everything with my back perfectly straight. i think ill go to the doctor if it still hurts tommorow

Lordosis

  2. a posture assumed by some female mammals during mating, in which the back arches downward.

Go anyway. It's time you had a routine checkup, in any case.

My brother had a fairly bad case of scoliosis as a freshman in high school. He has had to wear a brace for four years. At first it was all the time, now it is only when he's sleeping. As recommended by others in the thread, go see a doctor to see if it is severe enough to require correction. Heck, go to a doctor to see if you even have scoliosis. So difficult to try and diagnose things over the internet...

I assume you're talking about side curvature. It's within norms to be as much as 2-3 degrees off, but maybe you have more. I don't see how you can gauge it by yourself though.

I would go get it checked out.

I know what you're talking about - it's normal. I went through the same thing a while ago. I told my doctor "feel this, this isn't normal - I'm like a hunchback or something" He told me it was normal and not to worry about it...
Damn. Thanks for reminding me. Now I'm going to be pushing on the back of my neck all night.

Edit - the pain is probably due to something else. When I thought I was becoming a hunchback, I screwed my muscles in my neck up trying to "straighten" my spine out.
