I'm 13 and am going to be building my first computer and I don't to much gaming but I am getting to like photoshop and I like to multitask. Here is what I have in mind.

Duron 750mhz
Asus A7V
GlobalWin Fop32 w/Artic Silver
30GIG IBM 7200rpm
Sounblaster Live! Value
Leadtek Geforce2 MX
Toshiba 48x CD ROM
TEAC 1.44mb
256mb PC133 Corsair
Enlight 7237

I'm on a budget so keep that in mind. Is there anything here I could use to save money?

Yeah, why 256Megs Hubbs? If you're keen on saving money, going with 128megs will save you over $100(?), and 128Megs is still easily enough for most users.

Get KT7 raid and 2 15gig 75gxps. Get a Radeon, not GF2 MX. I'd cut back on the RAM and get a Tbird, but that depends on what ur doing.

Photoshop likes RAM, and it's getting damn cheap besides. Why hold him from his Photoshop? :D

If I were you I would get the Duron 600. You don't need PC133 SDRAM with a Duron, as the FSB is 100MHz. Because you have the FOP32 there, I'm assuming you're going to overclock, so make sure the A7V has dipswitches.

Evan, he's trying to save money. If you get 2 15GB 75GXPS, that'll be maybe $250, while a 30GB 75GXP is $150. Photoshop doesn't really access the hard drive all that much to make a difference if you've got 256MB of memory. Yes, the Radeon 32MB SDR does better in most benches than does the Geforce 2 MX, it's not on Pricewatch yet, and the estimated price will be $150, which is undercut by the GF2 MX by $40, going for the least expensive models.

Not too much gaming? Maybe you should try a Matrox G400 32MB, for $115, roughly. It's got excellent 2D, which is probably what you'll use most, and Matrox has long ago released TurboGL drivers for better OpenGL. Anyways, you shouldn't get a G400MAX because you can usually overclock the basic version to G400MAX speeds. My vanilla G400 DualHead goes up to 148/197 before funny colors appear.

So the 15GB is more expensive than the 30GB? Interesting observation.

*Revised Version*

AMD Duron 600 - $55
ASUS A7V with dipswitches - $150
PC100 Any Brand 256MB - $170
GlobalWin FOP32-1 with Arctic Silver - $25 (plus shipping), $14
IBM 75GXP 30GB 7200RPM - $155
Matrox G400 32MB SingleHead - $110
SoundBlaster Live! Value II - $50
Any Brand NIC - $25 from local shop
48X CD-ROM - $50 from local shop
TEAC 1.44MB - $15 from local shop
Enlight 7237 /w 250W PSU - $70

Altec Lansing ACS45.2 - $50
Samsung 755DF - $275

***ALL PRICES INCLUDE SHIPPING***

Total w/o monitor - $949
Total /w monitor - $1224

The Live! Value II is almost the same in price, but has more features. The GlobalWin FOP32 DOES NOT WORK on a Duron, just saw this. Get the FOP32-1, as indicated above. If you don't have broadband or not getting it, pick a modem. Oh yeah, and you'll definitely want a 17" or higher when working with Photoshop. Do you already have a monitor?

Marc, that's 2 x $125, roughly. How can that be more expensive per single unit? I'm talking about TWO for RAID. ;)

Thunderbird 700 is $50 more than a Duron 600, with no guarantee of higher overclockability.

IBM 75gxp 15gig is approximately $100. That's $50 more for a lot faster with a raid setup.

BTW- no G400, just not good enough for gaming.

Evan's thinking on the right track with the RAID setup getting two 15GB, that's a good idea.

It's the money thing, about $130 more including the higher price of the motherboard and the 2 15GBers. Even more if you decide to get a RAID card.

More like $70 and its worth it! I'd dump the extra ram in favor of the RAID. RAID will improve performance in more applications by a greater margin.
