I read that typically the females DON'T eat the males, and that it's fairly uncommon in nature. The idea that they usually eat the males after copulation is based on very old observations done in labs where the praying mantises were kept without being properly fed, and the females were literally starving.

So the next time your wife says she's hungry.... you'd damn well better feed her fast.
