longevity of AM2?

The reason I ask this, is that while Intels Conroe looks to be a great processor, Intel has had a bad habit in the past of changing sockets on everyone constantly. How long will AM2 last? Does Intel plan on keeping things stable with conroe? I'm thinking of getting a modest rig (but a good AM2 mobo). so that I can upgrade a lot in the future, but would it be worth it? I dont like overclocking, so please dont take that into the equation.

Likewise if you think Conroe will last a long time, I'd like to know more, because my knowledge about it is limited.

If am not mistaken, the AM2 standard leaves lot of room for improving the processor, right? In that case, I would guess that AM2 will be around for some time.

Socket AM2 will allegedly be compatible with AM3 CPUs. So, theoretically speaking, it should remain on the market for quite some time. Ofc, as anything goes when it comes to marketshare wars, you may never know for sure.

that's right.. it's supposed to take the next gen CPU's .. and i hope AMD release some more kick ass stuff so that those of us planning to buy into AM2 with the bottom of the barrel processors have something to look forward to when upgrading..

Heh, well what AMD socket in the past 2 years wasn't advertised to take "Next gen CPUs"? Im sitting here with my S754 and there are no dual-core, 64-bit processors have been made available for it. "Next-gen," technically speaking, CPUs aren't even out yet.

The situation just sucks. You can't trust either company. Even when Intel chooses to stay with the same socket and chipset, you still need to get a new motherboard. Whats up with that? Since AMD is falling behind in performance, I think they are going to try to win with value, like motherboards that arent obsolete in 6 months. It would be nice to see AM3 upgrade path for AM2 cpus. And it actually has be second guessing conroe, but conroe is so fast and overclocks so well....

I dont see why it would really matter. Motherboards are some of the cheapest components you can buy in a computer nowadays. Also, how often will you be upgrading? Plus, there's no way of knowing. The future hasn't even happened yet.

Please explain how AM2, a socket type, will be compatible with AM3, another socket type?

But if am2 is any indication of future improvements and innovations, which k8l should prove wrong, it won't be around long at all.

While its true that motherboards are not expensive, they are HELL to replace. You'd have to rebuild the whole thing.

True that.

Apparently it 'just does'. I think it will be like the whole 486 thing where you could stick processors inside of sockets where you'd normally think it wouldn't fit. Or it will be the same socket, just that one of the key benefits of AM3 is more HTT lines??

I stuck on socket 370 into a slot 1 motherboard. But I am sure AMD has mapped out AM2 -> AM3 better than that.

*Cough*... keep dreaming. S AM2 is a universal socket that will be used atleast for a few years. AM2, and AM3 Will both be fitting onto this socket. and since AM3 will be out begining of 2007 its got a bit of life span.

And just for you araczynski, dont bring that fanboy crap here. We deal with numbers and facts. and since there is no way that the fact that conroe is faster in most cases then AM2 CPUs, is going to effect the length of the socket life.

AM3 isnt a different socket type.. its a different CPU class...

Tell my wallet that back when I purchased my Intel 975X right after they were available ($248)
(yes, I knew conroe was coming out soon, and knew the board wasn't going to work, but I needed to build right then)
