Longest usb cord for charging a tablet?

I mounted a generic android tablet to a car seat to make a little media player for my kids, now I have to keep the thing charged - what's the longest I should go for a micro usb charging cord (to cigarette lighter)? Is there a point where the signal degrades? Routing it properly around the car will require 10+ feet, or I can just run it trhough the center of the car all messy like if it needs to be a shorter run.

According to USB specs, 10+ feet should be OK. Is there no lighter outlet in the rear seat area?

Or a place to mount one? A new socket would be generally useful, and easy to tie into the existing system.
