Longest freefall parachute jump -- you won't believe it!!!! Crazy!!!!

This air force guy back in 1960 jumped out of a balloon at over 102,000 feet! The freefall was over 4 mins. He reached speeds over700 MPH. Get this, he broke the freaking sound barrier!

Read all about him here.

He's my hero. RIP.

Damn that's pretty fast...i thought that his terminal velocity would have been less than that. That's pretty amazing.

<< i thought that his terminal velocity would have been less than that >>

You have to take into account the lack of atmosphere at that height.

Terminal velocity is a lot faster at 100,000 feet than at 10,000 feet. There's not much wind resistance up there.

Regardless, that guy has one hell of a life story to tell.

Damn. That's insane! I wonder what it would feel like to break the speed of sound.. lol

That is amazing!! I have jumped out of airplanes(hence the nickname), but can't even imagine it at that height........

On video, he looked like he was in space. Also, he was wearing a type of space suit.

<< isn't 100,000 ft. technically outerspace? that is just unreal. i can't even comprehend it. >>

I believe it's in the lithosphere...

In an issue of Wired a couple months back they did a big article on some one who is going to beat that old record. They also go into more detail about how its done, the speeds, survival, trying to get people to support you etc. Pretty interesting stuff.

I wonder if his body went through the physical turbulence that breaking the sound barrier has on a plane that goes through it?

About 19 miles up.. Man.. that's just crazy. Can you imagine falling for four minutes?!? It would seem like a lifetime!

I wonder how big the crater would be if your parachute didn't open ... :Q

You probably wouldn't make a crater. Ever see what happens to a water balloon when you drop it on concrete? That's your body hitting terra firma at terminal velocity.

pleasant thought😛

And my dog thinks he's the coolest when he sticks his head out the window (tongue slapping all around) at 65 mph. Imagine going that fast. You HAVE to get thrown all around.

Just to let you guys know, the longest Base jump was 41 seconds before opening his chute... Dave Barlia did that. Base jumping is when you jump off of something that is grounded, ie clif or bridge.
