The sad part is that some fools try to incorporate every giant word they can think of into their sentences in an effort to seem intelligent. Instead of getting the point across in the clearest, most concise way possible they try to confuse the listener, which defeats the purpose of talking to someone.

"I found your antidisestablishmentarianism appalling, even to such as extent that it gave me pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis, I was ostracized from Krungthepmahanakornamornratanakosinmahintarayutthayamahadilokphopnop- paratrajathaniburiromudomrajaniwesmahasatharnamornphimarnavatarnsathit- sakkattiyavisanukamprasit and supercalifragilisticexpialidociously relocated to Gorsafawddachaidraigodanheddogleddolonpenrhynareurdraethceredigion."
I.e., my butt itches.

Every once in a while I try to masturbate a large word into the conversation, even if I'm not sure exactly what it means.

lowtech, how does that really work, doesn't thai have its own set of characters?
Thai does have their own set of characters (Sanskrit/Khmer), but they use the alphabet for sounding out their translation similar to the Japanese. It is a damned hard language to read but quite easy to speak for Vietnamese or Chinese.

I'm from Cambodia.

I think my dad told me there are about 72 letters in the Khmer alphabet or something along those lines. I can write my name in Khmer, Chinese and English.

And that town name is crazy!

supercalifragilisticexpialidocious (yes it's in OED)

or if you count medicinal names: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
or if you count places: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (a city in Wales that actually has a website <-- check out that URL)

but other than that:

antidisestablishmentarianism
floccinaucinihilipilification
honorificabilitudinitatibus

I knew a guy from that city! He was an exchange student last year her at my college. We had him say where he was from and were like "WTF!?!?!"

What about lightyear?
What about megaparsec? One megaparsec = 3261634.07982 light-years. (And light-year is hyphenated. 😛)

Although I guess you could then go to exaparsec and beyond...

My mother is from Wales. 😉

You know what I never understood?

When a language has a completely different alphabet than English, they have to spell it phonetically using English letters to write it in English. With that said, how come I sometimes see a "phonetically" spelled word that is not pronounced anything like what the English letters spell?

I can see how with another language that uses a similar alphabet, such as Spanish or French, they may just copy the word over the same way it's spelled in their language to keep it easier. But when the language in question is one that doesn't use English letters and must be spelled out phonetically, shouldn't it be, well, spelled out phonetically?

That's what I always wonder. I have come to the conclusion that the people transferring the words are idiots.
