long USB printer run

I'm having a bit of a problem here. Due to the room configuration in my dorm, I had to buy a 15foot USB cable for my printer. Well, I have the printer driver (for Vista 64bit) installed, and the printer hooked up and on. But Vista does not see it. Through a search, I found what appears to be an answer: the cable is too long for the signal strength to survive enough for the printer to be recognized. Yet, I find this highly doubtful when considering 15' is not long at all.
Is there something I can do for this? I really need my printer now, seeing as school requires a lot of printing.

edit:
ha.. take that vista. I now have the printer hooked up normally, with the 15' cable. I had to grab new input drivers (aka among other things, updated usb drivers) from Intel. Now it works. 🙂

move along, all fixed.

I have no way of really determining that due to placement. I'll try and see if I can get it moved temporarily.

hmm, nope.. this short cable isn't working either, and it's the cable that came with my printer. Now this is strange, but at least it proves to me that the long cable should still work.

okay Mr. Microsoft, explain why it still doesn't work with a cable that came with my printer, which is a mere 6ft or so. 😉

it's no longer a cable issue, but rather a Vista issue. I have seen through my google searches, that a lot of people are having trouble getting some USB devices to be recognized by Vista. Sadly, this updated driver from DFI (not sure what it's actually for, sounds like it could include USB drivers but who knows) won't install. I'll go check Intel's site for drivers too, since the board has Intel chipsets.
