Long Term Kard- 9800 pro/xt or 59xx?

Like many pple r still using their GF4 Ti's, and getting perfectly playable framrates at acceptable resolutions in the latest games- which of the 9800 series or the 59xx series will be best placed say in 2 years time?

(and i dont really count the 'prediction' of 3dmark05- which shows 9800s doubling the scores of 5900s- from what i've read, as the gaming perfomance 2day seems fairly evenly matched- or should i be takeing 3dmark05 more seriously?)

It's commonly accepted that the 9800 cards are superior to the 5900 cards in most things. PS2.0 performance most notably. I had a nice 5900 (Gainward GS no less) and I ditched it for my current 9800 Pro if that tells you anything. 🙂

already got 9800 pro- just interested in general opinion- especially in light of the 3dmark05 scores...

Cheers folks 🙂

But what does this 'superiority' translate 2- for instance i am pretty certain that my kard ain't twice the beast the 5900s are- or are future games likely to be as heavily shader dependant as 3dmark05 suggests?- in which case this would make the 9800s very dominant a few games down the track...

oh well, whatever the turnout it looks like the general consensus is that i jumped the right way 🙂

Dude, I've played modern DX9 games on a 5900xt and a 9700. And I bought a second 9700 and am selling the 5900xt.

That's pretty much all you need to know.

3dMark05 is absolutely right about the FX series. I get a full resolution higher at the same framerate with the ATi than with the FX 5900xt in DX9 heavy games. In older games they are about equal. It's looking like for last generation cards ATi definitely has the advantage today and for the forseeable future.

There are no "long term" cards.

The 9800XT will be the longest-lasting of the cards you name . . . . i'd say one more good year; and another "tolerable" one. You will NEED to upgrade for DX10 (~'06)
(you're also gonna need to upgrade those 6800Standards then, also)
😛

A 9800p will stand its ground till dx10 with graphics similar to how a 4200 is holding up today. That is just my assumption. Note that it is based on dx10 comming out in the end of 2006.

sure . . . like the ti4200/radeon8500 "hold up" on the current DX9 games. 😉

Don't think your 6800Standard is gonna make it (either). . . . 😛
(except maybe "playable" FPS . . . . w/o dx10 'eyecandy'

. . . in SLI . . . . )
[ok, j/k'ing about the sli part]

It is spelled "Card". C - A - R - D...ar3e

and why cant i spell it 'Kard' m8?...do be a dick elsewhere- they'll appreciate it more!

9800 pro will last longer. fx series isn't good for even the games out now. If you want to keep up with 3dmark then i would upgrade now... but for playing games a 9800 pro is more than enough.

Should have bought a 9700 Pro when they came out and could still be using it today - it is pretty remarkable how long that card will continue to be a great performer. Barring Doom3, there has been no good reason a 9700 pro owner should really upgrade, and HL2 should run fine on it. To think that I could have just bought that instead of all of the "mid range" cards I have had in the interim....

Wow. Discussing 9800s and 5900s at the end of 2004 as a two year solution. These cards already offer half the performance of their successors? Pretty unwise buys unless you're really strapped.

the LE is nice due to its modding capability, but how many of them are gonna be available? Judging by its name, im guessing they're eventually gonna run out and not produce anymore

If CS:Source is any indication of how HL2 will run, then 9700 cards still have life in them yet. I can get around 50fps average in source at 10x7 with 2xAA/4xAF. HL2 will be more graphics intensive, so I may have to back off the AA/AF 🙁
