Long shot, but possible GOP Senate seat

It's a long shot, but would be an improvement.

"Senate Democrats are living on a prayer that things don’t go wrong for them in New Jersey.
Jury selection concluded Wednesday in the corruption trial of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), only the 12th sitting senator in U.S. history to face indictment. If he’s found guilty and forced to leave office before the end of the year that likely would hand Republicans his Senate seat until the 2018 elections, giving them a crucial extra vote as they try to salvage what they can of their and President Trump’s agenda and possibly resurrect their efforts to repeal Obamacare.

While many things need to break against Democrats for this to happen, the September trial has them nervous."

our Democratic friends will be happy to know that ex-Sen. Bob Torricelli may be looking to step into his shoes.

"And while New Jersey Democrats aren’t ready to abandon Menendez, who remains a powerful figure in the state, they’re already privately jostling for his seat in case he’s forced to step aside. One of those who’s been most public about his interest in running if Menendez has to leave is former Sen. Bob Torricelli (D-NJ), who left office under an ethics cloud of his own more than a decade ago."

http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/08/menendez_files_motion_to_stop_trial_for_senate_vot.html

"Menendez, who succeeded Jon Corzine in the Senate in 2006, is scheduled to stand trial Sept. 6 along with Salomon Melgen, an ophthalmologist from Florida, on a federal indictment accusing the men of swapping the senator's intervention in government matters for private trips on Melgen's plane and financial contributions, among other gifts."

3 names Democrats can be proud of, Menendez, Corzine and Torricelli.

Some of the analysis I've seen says Menendez isn't going anywhere even if convicted, that he will sit in his seat while going through appeal and run the clock out. Seeing some "Must give the people of NJ a voice in his replacement" talk as well. Thanks for the rationale, Mitch.

Looking at this administration NJ would be an improvement. The bar has been lowered.

Trump standards, baby!!

I pulling for you buddy. Here's to a few decades of complete GOP control. After that, even Canada should be proper fucked.

democrats should demand that his seat remain open until elections. You know, so "the people can decide." Good 'ol Mitch, setting precedent that keeps him up at night.

They'll want him to stay seated until 2018. He's already asking the court to allow recesses during the trial for him to go vote in DC on bills.

Ohh my god, crooked politians, in New Jersey! Their governer should clean up the state ... ohhh wait ... nevermid .... he's the most crooked of them all!

I'd look forward to a vote on keeping him seated if he gets convicted. Love to see Democrats voting to keep him, especially the ones up for re-election.

In my opinion, yes.

Harper suppressed 'inconvenient' science, propped up the oil industry, presided over a big drop in currency value and repeatedly rigged voting conditions to keep himself in power for as long as possible. Yeah, sounds like something a Trump worshipper would like.

As it is: thankfully, a Republican win in New Jersey is indeed a long shot. Trump's administration is doing wonders to scare people away from GOP.

I haven't really followed this case at all, but I'm really wondering how they can pursue it in the light of the recent Supreme Court unanimous decision in the VA governor McDonnell case. Both cases involved "gifts" from friends, the Supreme Court basically gutted the federal corruption law.

Here's some reading for you. At least economically, Harper was worse than the 2 previous PMs.

So in your opinion, in what way was it better for Canada with Harper in power?
Trudeau is a Liberal like Chretien and Martin, and I expect things will turn out as it did for those two.

Exactly. I'm glad the PC party is not in power. The country seems to do best socially, environmentally, and economically when the liberals are.

I think that how senator x from one state votes on allowing senator y from another state to stay seated will have a vanishingly small influence on any race.

Did somebody say Senator Chris Christie?
