Long recovery from Hibernation and momentary strange noise

Hello,

Just an hour or so ago, when I started my computer (which I'd put into hibernation the night before), when the recovery progress bar got to the end (I was away while it was loading by the way) it took a tremendously longer amount of time to get into Windows than usual (around 5 minutes to get to the Welcome screen), the hard drive wasn't being accessed much judging by the LED near the power button and the sound although it WAS being accessed, and there was a strange sound coming from the computer; I'm not sure but I think it was near the 3 1/2 inch drive bays. It sounded a little like water running or something; it wasn't very audible but enough so for me to hear it somewhat from around 40 centimetres (around 1 foot 4 inches) away, which is how far my head is from the CPU.

Is it possible that the hard drive is failing? Should I be worried? This is the first time this every happens; there were no errors and it got into Windows fine and the noise disappeared as soon as it got to the Welcome screen in Windows.

Thanks,
Laogeodritt

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention, my computer's only around 11 months old; the brand of hard drive is unknown as I bought this system pre-built from Future Shop.

Do a cold boot (wait 60 secs before you power on again). If you don't power off occasionally, the memory never gets flushed.

Er, I usually shut down the computer every second day rather than hibernate, depending on what I was doing.

Still, how does that relate to my query? As I said, when I got back to the computer (I'd turned it on a few second prior before going to get something), the hibernation recovery bar was full, yet the hard drive was hardly being accessed it appears (the LED was only blinking occasionally; it didn't sound like the hard drive's head was searching for data either).

Windows screws up like that sometimes. I would try hibernating again, and see what happens. If it happens often, defrag your drive and run some cleanup utilities.

Ah, okay. Thanks.

But as for the noise? Nothing to be worried about?

If it's preventing you from getting a good night's sleep, download Western Digital's HDD diags from here 😉

Pardon? No, I put my computer in hibernation during the night if I can't shut it down. I meant the noise that was coming from the computer during the time that Windows was recovering from hibernation which ceased afterwards.
