Long filenames under DOS? is it possible?

Is it possible to get long filename support when you use a boot floppy? I need to copy someones data off a laptop, which will only boot to safe mode and the only way I can do it is using a zip disk, which I can get to work under dos, but i need to keep the long filenames (which i cannot do in safe mode, as i cannot get safe mode to see a zip drive, except through a dos prompt, which wont copy long filenames, its a bit confusing!!)

DOS version 7 and 7.1 support long file names; DOS 6.22 and below do not.

In order to cope with long file names, you need to use quotation marks around the filenames.
