Long Distance Interview

If you are called to go for an interview and the position is very far away (we're talking AZ-NY)......
Do you think it's reasonable to ask for an initial phone interview?

I don't want to fly all that way if they are interviewing 10 or 12 people....if it's narrowed down to 2 or 3 that's a different matter.

What do you think?

If they're paying the airfare and you really want the job, you should go. How's it gonna look if you're the only one who doesn't interview in person?

If they're interested in you then they should pay your airfare.

It probably easier for both parties if you start out with a phone interview.

My current job is in Vancouver but I was living in Montreal when they approached me. We did several phone interviews. They then flew me to Toronto for a face to face interview. They even payed for my car rental for the whole weekend.
