Is the main problem with IE, then you also notice that FF is getting slow, but Chrome isn't, or is the main problem with FF?

Which add-ons/plug-ins do you have installed/enabled? Cleared out the disk cache recently?

Are there many files in your downloads folder? Can you go into it through Windows Explorer quickly?

I moved my Dowloads folder to a mapped drive on the network. It's on a Seagate GoFlex Home 2TB network drive. The hard drive apparently sleeps all the time because it often takes a lot more than 10s for it to wake up and allow me to start browsing directories.

I did similar, setting the download directory for FF on my VM to a mapped drive on the host system. Usually not a big wait, but I could see waiting on an external taking that long.

I dont have chrome. dont care to install it. I have opera and use that sporadically.

I use my SSD evo 840 128gb for my OS and saved downloads so it should be instant.

I also noticed something else. when I open the downloads folders it open it up and I quickly notice all the files are not in the order I want, it shows the folder is working or calculation with the swirling circle and then 3 seconds later it sorts all the downloads according to "date" which is what its set at. isnt it supposed to be instant with an ssd?

UPDATE
I did these
http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/clear-windows-7-cache/

http://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/clear-delete-the-thumbnail-cache-in-windows-7/

so I think you were right @mikeymikec any cache in FF I can clear besides cookies (I manually accept each one so thats fine)??
I dont use IE at all.

anyway to remove all the polished transition effects and aero effects in W7?

dont like to see anything under a folder im browsing. screws up my eyes.

thanks guys

How many files are in your downloads folder? I would expect a folder sort to occur near-instantly even with a HDD (unless you have a heck of a lot of files in there or you wish to sort by a custom field which perhaps requires indexing to work faster).

I don't think you need to worry about clearing the FF disk cache, since evidently the problem is with reading the folder's contents.

I wonder whether the indexing is screwed up for that folder.
To reset the index:
Control Panel > indexing options > advanced > rebuild > OK

I am not sure why you keep going on about chrome. One other trick you can try is to move all your contents from the Download folder to another location (move, not just copy) and then move them back.

You can disable aero. Control Panel -> System and Security -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Advanced -> Visual Effects

Or just choose a theme without Aero. Right click your desktop -> Personalize

mikeymikec asked about chrome. I did what you recommended. seems the same. but good I tried it.

btw, how do I know that the SSD is doing garbage collection? I shoot weddings. I store them on 3 different HDD for backup but everytime I edit a wedding I move it to the SSD. I edit, then burn it then erase and im sure it affecting the SSD like it would on a HDD that would need defragging after a while? just wondering how you can see its activated and when is it working?

thanks guys for all the help
