Long boot up time??

I just installed my DSL service and now all of a sudden it takes upwards of 5 min to boot my computer up. Before it used to only take around 30-45 seconds. They DSL kit came with a Kingston ethernet card and a external speedstream dsl modem. Any help would be appreciated on why it is taking so long to boot. Everything else works fine the service is fast.

Go into your network properties and uninstall some of the unused protocols. The more protocols you have installed, the longer it will take to boot up Windows...

Also does you ISP dynamically assign you an IP or do you have a static one? The long boot up may also be caused by your PC trying to get an IP from your ISP...

Check to see if you have the Novell Client loading....you don't need it. Get rid of it. 🙂

The only thing I have loading is TCP/IP. MY isp dynamically assigns me an IP but ive tried booting with the DSL modem on and off and the time still didnt change, the computer basically just sits there for about 5 min and then starts loading again and I usually sign on to the service when the computer is started so its not signed on all the time plus it usually takes 2 seconds to give me an IP.

try removing all teh protocols and see what happens

and how do you connect to your dsl after you're computers started up, unless you're using win2k. and what do you mean you installed your dsl service? did they give you software of some sort and if so, what?

On tcp/ip of your Kingston NIC unbind Client for MS Networks and file sharing.

I connect to my dsl by clicking on something called enternet300. I unbinded the clients for ms network and file sharing and it didnt change anything. The dsl modems lights also flash while im waiting for it to boot up so maybe something is going on there.

This is a common problem. I believe that your boot is being delayed by the fact that you have a dynamic IP. As I understand it, which is just barely, Winders does not like the fact that there is no IP assigned when you boot up and it looks and looks and looks for one.

On one of the dsl websites, I found an article that suggested that I set an IP for the TCP/IP binding to the network adapter. So go to network and find the entry for TCP/IP and your network card. Go to properties and a dialog box will come up allowing you to enter an IP address and a subnet mask. Put 192.168.0.1 in as your IP address and 255.255.255.0 in as your subnet mask.

Don't know how or understand why, but it worked for me.

192.168.0.1 is as far as I can understand (on my network) the number windows automatically assigns to a pc on a network if it can't find any other.
So by providing an address of your own windows does not have to look for one.
But when you connect using your cable modem you are assigned ANOTHER address by the provider..

Thanks that seemed to fix it finally. Now im booted up in under a min instead of around 3 min.
