I just built my first computer, and im loving it, but it has a strange problem with long loading time.
It is plenty fast in loading to the desktop, around 13 sec from boot, but once i am im windows i cannot execute any
programs for another min or so. I am used to slow load times with my old Intel 700 but i could tell that the hard drive
was very busy, with the new computer nothign seems to happen in that time, i can tell from the HD led that it is not busy
thinking. I am wondering what might be causing this problem, all my drivers are current.
Oh durring that time i can perform simple things like opening up the start button and going into my recycle bin.
Other than this slight inconvience my system runs perfect
Im using an Intel P4 2.53 in an ASUS P4T533 with 512 RDRAM 4200RIMM, WD 80GB SE, Lite-On 48x CDRW, Geforce2 Ultra Visiontek,
Win XP home OEM version

Welcome to AT. Your problem could be related to items you have opening at startup such as anti-virus software, etc. Try trimming this down a bit by disableing all that you can that you don't have to have loading automatically. There are various ways to do this but I won't go into that unless you need help with it. LMK.

Thanks Buz 2b
I already looked into that and i have very few programs that open durring start up, and the ones that I do have start as soon as i get into windows. I know its very odd. It is almost Uber fast in booting to desktop but once it does it just sits there stupid for another 60 seconds not doing anything. Once again in that time i can do certian things in windows, like using the calculator but other applications such as my games or explorer ect. will not even try to open till that certian time frame ends. I also noticed that my desktop icons seem to flicker when that odd period is up.
Thanks again for any suggestions

Hmmm, there is something going on here and I am pretty sure it is fairly simple. I just have to rattle my brain cells a bit because I KNOW I have seen something similar a while back.
Have you (and I don't think this is where I found the trouble before but humor me) tried running MSConfig and look under the "startup items" just to be sure? If so, can you list them for me?
Also, as soon as you boot the next time, immediately press CTRL-ALT-Del (three finger salute) and see what is under the "Applications" tab, then just look over the "Processes" list for anything unfamiliar. Don't disable anything yet though. As I said, I don't think this is where the solution was found but I'll keep rattleing my brain.
As an afterthought, why don't you run a "System Cleanup" followed by a Defrag on the C drive. Run the Defrag twice in a row. Again, humor me. Then go into System Restore and create a Restore point. I think a "light" is starting to come on but it is too early to tell. LMK how it goes.

My selected startup items are
dw
PgMonitr
NEWDOT~1
nwiz
pccguide
PCCClient
Pop3trap
dumprep 0-k
aim
No applications running
Nothing strange in Processes
Ran disk cleanup and defraged twice as suggested
Also durring that time there is 0% CPU usssage while im idle
Void time still at about 60 sec
I was wondering if there was some sort of technical name for the limited computer response I seem to be getting, if anyone knows

It could be a couple of things that come to mind after seeing your list. Are you on a DLS or broadband connection? It could be AIM attempting to connect and sign in.
Also, why is "Void time still at about 60 sec"?
I still say it is something simple but haven't thought of it. Hopefully we have generated enough messages back and forth to draw someones interest. You might also want to try this inquiry in the OS Forum; it is most likely an XP related thing if not software.

If it were mine, I would try reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows from the ground up. But maybe try this: start Windows in Safe Mode and see if it still eXPeriences the problem. If it doesn't, then one of the Startup items is probably the problem.
Edit: never fails, I post and then think of something else to suggest Have you installed either the Intel INF update or the Intel Application Accelerator? The INF update apparently should be installed first, then IAA if you want it.

What OS are you using?
If you are using w2k, do you login to a domain or not?
Do you set NIC to DHCP?
