Will Mitt Romney's London woes hurt him at home?

Team Romney has long made it clear that the travelling pool - the journalists and camera people who record and monitor their every step - will not be allowed to follow them to the opening ceremony itself.

The London leg of Mitt Romney's much-vaunted foreign trip could hardly have gone worse.
It has even spawned its own Twitter hashtag: #romneyshambles.

"Mr Romney's message for viewers back home - that he connects with the leaders of America's allies and can be trusted with its interests abroad - lies in tatters”

Is there such a thing as being not an honoured guest, but a dishonoured one?

If so, Mr Romney is one. The prime minister has dismissed his 2002 Olympic triumph as being "in the middle of nowhere"; a UK minister told Newsnight he would have no chance of carrying the Olympic torch after his remarks, and Mayor Boris Johnson simply mocked him.

The British newspapers are vicious this morning. "Romney slur causes stir - wannabe president in Games insult," says the Sun.

"Who invited party pooper Romney?" asks the Daily Mail, above a headline listing the "gaffes of muddled Mitt".

The Times is, if anything, even more savage. "'Nowhere man' Romney loses his way with gaffe about the Games" is their headline.

He's offended the British government. The British press have decided he is a knave and a fool. Opponents at home have gleefully leapt on his woes.

Romney never had a shot at winning, anyone who thinks otherwise was played.

I do think he'll lose, but it's a bit early for the eulogy. He's not exactly down by ten points or anything. And it's not like more than 1% of Americans know about or even care about his London "performance".

I'm still predicting a Romney victory.
He's managed to say very, very little about what he would actually do as President. He managed to sidestep showing us his taxes and he is going to blow away all fundraising records.

There is pending state litigation. It also looks like the DoJ is readying a federal lawsuit. I doubt the Voter ID law will be in action in PA for this election.

The pending litigation is too little too late unfortunately in my estimation.

Why do you think the right wing in the media and in congress made it a point to go after Eric Holder?

Because if this litigation came up and the DoJ had anything to do with it.

Out comes the "only Attorney General held in contempt (or however it's phrased) by the House" talking point.

He was out for the count before he even became their main push for candidacy. Honestly, he will get core Republicans backing him, the idiots that tow party lines, but he won't get any swing voters and he will lose out in certain other parts of the R party, the ones that aren't so hardcore.

Santorum and Herman Cain were better candidates for their party and they were jokes.

Sorry, I don't see any polling to support most of these claims. He's actually doing pretty well among independents -- now granted that many "independents" are actually Republicans who don't want to be associated with the party, but still.

Mr. Romney is a far-from-ideal candidate, but he was the best of the sorry lot of Republican candidates (at least of those not undercut by the Party Establishment before they could get any traction). He has the advantage of running against a less-than-inspiring incumbent during an historically weak economy.

Don't discount Mr. Romney's chances.

Don't discount Romney's chances? He has none. Seriously Cain was the better candidate, if you don't understand why well then I guess you just don't understand the voters. Romney is a lose lose for the Republicans because when he loses this election(if he even gets the candidacy without to much hassle) it'll be the death of the Republican party for the most part. They'll have lost all their steam, they are actually throwing out one of their "Top Guns" and he's going to get SMOKED by Obama. It really is sad to think the Republican Elite are this stupid.

Anyone who thinks Cain was a better candidate than Romney, or even a decent candidate, is too far gone to even debate.

Cain was better at connecting with people.

\you want a job, don't you?

This. Cain got it, he wouldn't be my choice and I wouldn't have voted for him, but anyone who thinks Cain would have done worse than Romney is lulzy. You really do believe to much of the non-sense you're fed lol.

You keep saying this, but you don't offer anything to back it up.

Sorry, no, I don't understand. Please feel free to explain.

Romney's not a "top gun". He's just the least bad of a sorry lot, as others have said.

If he loses, the party will just blame it on him being a shitty candidate -- which he is -- and they'll move on.

What I want to know Dave is why you didn't predict this fiasco. You're failing.

I heard a sound clip on the news by a guy in London, not sure if it was just a reporter or someone running the Olympics, said Mitt Romney was right on and that they did have serious security issues.

That's besides the point. Even if they do have security issues, there are smart and stupid ways of responding to them.

Actually Romney was groomed by the Mormon Church since 2002. If you recall the Church so much wanted the games in Salt Lake City they bribed the Olympic Committee. When it was discovered and the games were in jeopardy the Mormon church raised a huge amount of money to keep the games. Then they appointed Mitt as its head. The Church ran the games and made sure there was no more hanky panky, and kept the costs down by making it essentially a religious requirement of the largely Mormon companies that ran it.

The supposed 40 million in "profit" doesn't count the 500 million dollars the Federal government gave the games.
In actuality the games lost almost a half a billion dollars.
