We have an internal chat system - Microsofy Lync. It's pretty terrible but it is extremely useful.

Today I was having a lengthy conversation with a co-worker troubleshooting something. From time to time something was said that was "lol" worthy. Is "lol" ever ok to say to someone that you work with?

Depends who you're talking to.

If you're talking to a fellow coworker, yes. If you're talking to a Senior Manager / Partner.... No. Shut your whore mouth with statements like that.

lol it was a co-worker. No idea if I outrank him or vice-versa as we are in different areas but we don't normally work together so it doesn't really matter.

For sure. Email is always formal. Those get forwarded and are usually serious. Spark is just us worker bees.

We are very laid back. If the situation you just described had happened the "boss" reply would have been: "OK, whenever you get time. Thanks!"
