We have an internal chat system - Microsofy Lync. It's pretty terrible but it is extremely useful.

Today I was having a lengthy conversation with a co-worker troubleshooting something. From time to time something was said that was "lol" worthy. Is "lol" ever ok to say to someone that you work with?

Yes, if the person doing it is a woman.

I do it at work when the situation warrants it. Of course, my works chats are littered with heavy sarcasm.

Say whatever you want man. Depending on the co-worker you can say varying levels of bullshit.

copied directly from the last "chat" I had with a coworker over Spark:

Stuff like that would confuse me in a work environment.

Boss: "Rudeguy, get those reports on my desk ASAP".

Rudeguy: "Ain't nobody got time for that"

Boss: "Uh...Did you just refuse to what I asked"?

I wouldn't, but I'm a colossal stick in the mud. If people in your office are generally OK with it, that's all that matters.

IM / Lync - yes.

e-mail - no, unless a doofy response comes at me. But, I never send out the 1st e-mail with LOL in it.

Depends who you're talking to.

If you're talking to a fellow coworker, yes. If you're talking to a Senior Manager / Partner.... No. Shut your whore mouth with statements like that.

lol it was a co-worker. No idea if I outrank him or vice-versa as we are in different areas but we don't normally work together so it doesn't really matter.

For sure. Email is always formal. Those get forwarded and are usually serious. Spark is just us worker bees.

We are very laid back. If the situation you just described had happened the "boss" reply would have been: "OK, whenever you get time. Thanks!"
