Well...a merge of servers would be horrendous - and I hope unlikely. I highly doubt they would do this...unless a serious majority of the existing population wanted to...which by all indications from reading the boards is not likely to happen.
"As nobody with a shed of dignity would continue to play after this"...please. Plenty of people are smart enough to realize this wont impact their gaming experience in anyway other than positively and will continue to play and enjoy the game.
As far as non exchange servers merging - that is a valid point. ...if 2 servers come together it would only make things easier in general. Lag wont be an issue as they wouldnt overpopulate a server in a merge - it would just make it easier to find a group and more players similar to yourself to guild with or play with.
however - 2 economies being merged might be difficult - but I highly doubt the demand will be high enough to make it so a server pop is brought so low as to be unsustainable alone. If the demand is enough to motivate enough people to leave a server for the new exchange ones to make it so that 2 non exchange servers need to be merged then holy crap - people really do want this in the game and its a good thing they made it. If not - then its just business as normal.
Either way - its not going to change how I play one bit. but I think it is premature to assume that 2 servers will have to be merged (and unlikely in my opinion) - if they are - it will be a sad day for MMO gaming I agree.
As for this..."Just because Sony ruined EQ1 doesn't mean an enjoyable experience can no longer be had and that you have to succumb to their further attempts to blaspheme the genre"
I didnt succomb to anything - whats missing from the EQ1 days in the new games...how about the first experience. Everything was new and exciting. The game was fun because it was new.
Now things are different but its tough to make up a new game that is as shockingly new as the origional was because it was so different from what else was out at the time.
WoW and EQ2 are both 2nd generation games - and each unique and fun...just missing that same "holy crap" factor that was so prevelent in early EQ1.
Maybe vanguard can bring this back...but I dont think Sony ruined EQ1 - they actually made it fun for longer than any other RPG has done. The changes that were made became more and more repetative because they ran out of AMAZINGLY innovative ideas. Is that their fault? well i guess partly - but can you blame people for being unable to invent something?
The MMO market has matured to the point that things are all the same with new bells and whistles - but basically the goals in each game are the same...make my character better than your character. Indirect PvP. Killing mobs serves as a way to prove you are better than others around you - but really the goals of the game are to outdo those around you by being higher level - better skilled at killing mobs - better equiped.
Gone are the days of playing the game because it is new and cool...its how quickly can I race to the top. I try to not get caught up in this and just play for the fun of the experience in the game - but people are caught up in the min - maxer role all the same. Often without realizing it.
I really enjoy the WoW PvP structure...it provides instant feedback and is challenging. EQ2 has a better quest system so when I want to play a quest type game thats my choice. There is no game that I can play right now that is so different from everything else out there that it really satisfies my urge to explore new content...cause its all basically the same now.
Maybe I am different from you in this regard - just thought I would bring up what I meant by saying gone are the days of EQ1. I dont think SOE ruined the game - it simply "got old" lost its newness factor and holy crap wow ability. I have been spoiled.
Whats wrong? - well lots of things... but mainly feeling inefficient while gaming. Doing a quest knowing that grinding would have leveled me faster. That thought never used to enter my mind while playing. I just went out and explored - grouped because it was fun - not because I got more exp then soloing (or the other way around).
I think it will be interesting to watch these new servers - they will have by FAR the most advanced economies of any game to date - as every choice will have real world implications. Might add a new flavor to the game that some folks want - not me - but some people will enjoy that. Makes them feel "worth playing."
who knows - but to toss out the fact that this will be the downfall of a hugely successful game is just premature. All 500 people who are really upset by this will quit - but the silent majority of players who could care less what happens on someone elses server will just continue on without a blip.
But I agree - if it means merging servers that will piss a lot of people off...and rightfully so - then they would have something to bitch about - but unless that happens - "Who cares???"
