lol, went from a 8800GTS 640 to 2600XT

I decided to sell my 8800GTS, just before the 8800GT hit. I'm gonna wait till RV670 comes out and see what the performance is like before deciding between the 8800GT and RV670.

To hold me over I bought a 2600XT...I only really wanted to play HL2: Episode 2. I'm not even gonna bother with Crysis for a while. I'm running it a 1440x900 with 2AA and 16AF and high details except shadows and as far as I can tell it doesn't drop below 30fps all while looking very good. Makes me like Valve a lot more knowing that you don't need a top-end rig to run their games without the game looking like crap.

So far I can take the card up to about 890-900MHz core but the memory only goes to about 800MHz.

Anyone have any experience overclocking this card?

Why no shadows? I can get a solid 25-30fps on Ep with a x1950gt at 1920x1080 everything maxed. Without AA, I can get over 30.

Yeah but that graphics engine is a couple years old now. Thats where the performance comes from IMO.

the point is, that the same card at whatever settings gives out 30 FPS will make that game look BETTER then crysis. And a few other such new games... all too often new games only look good at max settings, and look like crap on anything below that... They should look better on every setting (on comparible FPS for the same card that is...)

Less than he would have lost if he had hung onto the 8800GTS. It's already devalued anywhere from 50-100$(depending on what you have), which is ALMOST the value of the 2600XT.

IMO, not a bad move, but I might have bought a new 8600GT or something like that from EVGA, that way I could step up to a GT later(assuming competitive pricing here)

I think its been pretty well proven that ol'gabe can code a game to look good and play better across the board on a veriety of GPU's than anyone else. As far as i'm concerned, Crysis does not look that great for its crappy frame rate performance. You can turn things down to make it look like crap and it still stutters. I dont doubt that there will be a nice patch that will take care of most of its poor performance.

well the GTS 640mb wen down from 340$ yesturday to 280$... more then what I can walk into frys and pick up a GT for...

Maybe in a couple of days it will actually be worth buying...

What's wrong with that?? TF2, HL2/Ep1/Ep2, etc. etc. all look great...

And by looking great, I mean decent graphics running at great framerates...

No point having a photorealistic game if you're getting crap framerates..kind of loses the appeal of the game to me..

Crytek did a good job of pushing graphics cards to the limit...but it's no good if the best cards are getting minimal framerates..

The true test of a game is to look great, as well as giving the customer great framerates on their existing hardware..

Yeah exactly, once I saw some preliminary benchmarks of the GT I figured it would depreciate a lot so I sold it and got more than I would have paid for a GT. I almost sold my GTS for almost $400 but eBay cancelled the auction because they said there was some unauthorized bidding. I ended up selling for less but still more than I was hoping for.

I thought of the 8600GT, but it was more expensive than the 2600XT, here in Toronto anyway and the Stepup from Canada is a bit of a pain I think since we COULD be charged customs when it crosses the border. Plus I figured I could use an extra card with HDMI once I build a HTPC.

I really wish there were some volt mods for the 2600XT though...I'd love to experiment.

I'm just gonna wait for RV670 to come out to see how it performs. If it loses badly I'll buy a GT. If it performs similarly and costs about the same I'll pick one up for sure...maybe 2 😀

Exactly. It's not that hard for a game developer to put out a game that is at or beyond the ability of current high-end video cards to render at a playable framerate. The true test is to make the game look and play well using only current mid-range systems as well.
