It was the times, post race-riot white paranoia. Bronson played a well dressed white man dispensing justice to all sorts of less white people, usually ghetto dwellers.

Bronson is colorblind in dispensing justice. In #1 or #2 the guys he was looking for were black, though, IIRC. I think he killed the shit out of almost anyone he came across most of the time, regardless.

#1, #3, and #4 are on Netflix.
 
The death wish movies were horribly written & horribly acted. Yet they remain my guilty pleasures with other cheesy movies like Escape from New York, Delta Force, Invasion USA & Commando.
 
More interesting is how Bronson (I'll never understand how this dude who seems like he should be typecast as an aging Mexican pedophile starred in all these 80's action movies) wields an M1919.

What was very interesting was how Bronson scored so much young tail in those Death Wish films. Starting in Death Wish 2 the women were at least 30 years his junior.
