Yeah, it's just an extension of capitalism. Apple charges $200 for an $80 hard drive and people rush to give them money. They know they're overcharging. Their gain, their users' loss.

Uneducated Apple users are looked down on by computer-savvy people in a similar fashion to how uneducated PC users are looked down on when they spend tons of money on the Geek Squad to "fix their computer." They're similar wastes of money. Stupidity is platform-agnostic.

What I can't stand is when I see Mac users complaining about how expensive the computers are yet they still insist on buying them. Those people have realized that Apple is a rip off, yet they continue to give them money. That's just dumb. Apple is very much pay to play. You want OS X? Pay up. You're looking at several hundred bucks extra for similar hardware to run it. Think that's unfair? Quit whining. Either pay it and shut up, or switch to Windows (or better yet, Linux, which is free) and save money since you think Apple's hardware prices are unfair.

It's all up to the user. I just don't want them to QQ to me about how Apple's mean for charging them too much but they refuse to look at alternatives.
 
1. Yes, Apple products are more expensive than their competitors. I doubt that is why you hate Apple, because the price would only affect you if you wanted to buy one of their products, which I doubt you do. I think it's funny how so many people who would never even consider buying an Apple product care so much about the price.
2. Every PC manufacturer overcharges on RAM upgrades. Maybe Apple does it more than others, I don't know. As has been pointed out, the US price for that kit is about 50% higher than at Newegg, which seems pretty typical for RAM markup.
3. Looking at it as a 6 GB upgrade makes no sense at all considering that the 2 GB it's replacing probably cost $50.
4. Obviously you can buy the memory wherever you want and install it yourself.

So in summary, Apple profits from some consumers' noobishness.

That's why you don't buy extra RAM from Apple. I bought a Mac Pro last year with the base 2GB of RAM and then bought 8GB of additional RAM via an online store. I saved a couple hundred, if I remember correctly.

a 50% markup is typical for DELL or HP or whoever. It just seems more extreme because it's so much money. Half of $1500 is a lot of money, half of $200 isn't so much. But it's still 50%. Dells markups are no better, as I sited my neighbor who spend $115 for a 500gb HD when he already had an 80. That's well over a 50% markup even. 80GB hd's on Newegg are like 50 bucks. So he paid $175 for a 500gb. that's a 3 times + markup. Doesn't look as shitty of a deal though because it's only $115 total.

Read my post in full. They're charging a little over 50% more than the retail cost for the RAM upgrade. For the hard drive, they're charging more than double the retail cost (again, not taking into account the cost of the 160 GB hard drive that they're removing in order to install the 500 GB one). Since Apple gets these hard drives presumably at a significant discount, they're charging probably around 3-4x as much as they pay for them.

ive got a room full of puters for my kids to use (and me to use as a render farm) as well as a couple laptops on the same network wirelessly, not to mention 12 years of customers using pcs and not one is a money sink or paperweight.

I don't know if the question was directed towards me, but I have 10GB of RAM. My Mac Pro is used as a Digital Audio Workstation with Logic Pro 8 running at 24/96. I use software samplers and software instruments with HUGE audio files; Toontrack's Superior Drummer 2.0 and loads of East/West Quantum Leap sound libraries to include EWQL Symphonic Orchestra Platinum Pro. If you understand what I just said, then I'll have answered your question. 🙂
