LOL - the outcry against America's Army (THE COMPUTER GAME) has finally arrived

Florida attorney Jack Thompson, who's a well-known adversary of violent video games, is now after the popular FPS America's Army. According to him, the game is "training" children to be snipers. An article at ABC News speaks more on this issue.

From ABC report:
"While the Defense Department was trying to find the serial sniper in the Washington, D.C., area," he continued, "they were training new snipers to take their place."

😕 :disgust:

edit: damn ambulance chasers, how I hate and despise their unethical kind. He's just trying to cultivate a lawsuit against the gov't for big bucks. If he actually had any knowledge or information about the game, he would know that shooting civilians, friendlies, or superior officers inside the game makes for a very quick game over (very cool represented inside a jail cell as well, you have to restart the game in order to play again, but then I've only played the game a couple of times so that may have changed some). Suffice to say, the game punishes the type of action that this ambulance chasers tries to allude that it awards.

Please. You might as well eliminate all FPS games, too. If a person is bent on killing, then they will do so regardless of this or any other similar game. Also, parents should monitor what their children habits. Same ol' crap.

This Jack Thompson guy is an idiot. Snipers play valuable roles in both wartime and peacetime, for combat, security, and police action. Just because a serial killer chooses that as their method of murder does not make the job of sniper inherently evil.

Somebody needs to whack this guy upside the head with a 2x4.

I've been playing bloody, gory killing games all my life and I haven't once had the urge to sit on a roof somewhere with a high powered rifle and watch someone's neck explode after pulling the trigger.

But, seriously, if this guy is serious, he should petition for all FPSs to be banned. Lets see this guy go down in flames 😀

HEY! I can quit ANY TIME I WANT!

(do we have to describe every game that we post a story about?)

yep, i'm really good in racing games, but i don't have i license, but i'll probably drive good in real life too. Anyone wanna race me?

yeah, it's bullcrap. Although, the game sucks anyways, IMO, so, no problems with it here, except it's just stupid since they just want money out of a suit.

What kind of BS is this, he says that FPS players train "obsessively". Man, this guy needs to just calm down. Why do people always need to find a scapegoat when something goes wrong. This guy should do something constructive instead...:disgust:

last i checked america's army didn't teach people to cut holes in the trunk of their cars and shoot out of those.

I would assume that most people here have heard of the game. I dont play computer games AT ALL (the last game I played was MYST), and I still heard of it.

If you could learn to be a dead shot by playing FPS games with a mouse and keyboard, how do you explain the obvious discrepancy between my success at playing FPS games and my complete ineptitude as a marksman in real life?

I can thread the eye of a needle from hundreds of yards away in a video game.
Give me a real weapon, and you'd quickly realize that I could miss the side of a barn.

edit: nm

Just reading this story makes me want to lie in wait outside Jack Thompson's house, peering down the sights of my rifle, waiting until I can pop his he... damn it, it must be those video games I've been playing. Calm down, calm down.

I faking hate people like this! "Teaching kids to be snipers..." Hello! Earth to moron! Sniping in real world is vastly different than sniping in FPS-games! In FPS games I snipe by staring at the sreen. I take aim by clicking the right mouse-button. I adjust my aim by moving the mouse. I shoot by clicking the left mouse-button. Is that ANYTHING like sniping in real life? NO! In fact, I couldn't possibly be any more different! Or are sniper-rifles mouse-operated these days?

According to people like that, I'm not only competent sniper, I'm also capable of flying fighter-planes, driving tanks, flying spaceships, flying helicopters etc. etc. All thanks to the fact that I have operated those machines in a computer game.

Nevermind the dastardly lessons I'm learning playing Chu Chu Rocket!

I think there should be capital punishment for severe cases of stupidity. People like Jack Thompson are nothing but waste of space. Seriously: what is his excuse for his continuous existence?

As an aspiring ambulance chaser, I take exception to the lawyer bashing in this thread. I love my first-person shooters, and most of the people who work in my office love them as well.

This guy is just an idiot - plain and simple. There can be no comparison to scooting a mouse around a pad and actual sniping.
