I work seasonally at the Reds stadium, and before one of the games last month they had these 'All Star" softball guys come in and have a makeshift home run derby. I'm sorry, but I don't find that impressive at all. It's softball.....

I used to play in a fun rec league with some friends, but I decided to not come back the next season because we were always playing against these douche bags who dressed up in actual baseball uniforms, wore black under their eye, used bat donuts, etc. How can anyone get that much into softball?

I call them softball heroes...and they're uber seriousness over softball is quite comical.

Anyone know anyone like this...or are one themselves?

/joker Why so serious?

I've seen guys like that at WIFFLE ball tournaments.

http://www.lincolnwiffle.us/

The picture on the front page is of this team that's won this big tournament 4 years in a row. Their last year's uniforms were more elaborate than this years, but they still wore batting gloves, real cleats, and of course, wore some eye black.

So yes, to answer your question, I do know people like that, heh.

yes. my office formed a team and we signed up for a rec league. I thought we would play against other office teams. Instead we're playing against "softball heroes" hlding on to their HS glory. No fun, we get our asses kicked weekly.

I know exactly what you are talking about... and its not simply limited to that sport!

I know someone who is like that in regards to basketball/soccer, obsessed with competing with people he knows he can destroy.

And tries to "teach" others how to be better, and saying they failures for not getting onto any teams, when he himself was never on a team.

Yes. I LOVE playing softball, but I'm out there to do these things, in this order:

1. Have fun
2. Exercise
3. Get outside
4. See and interact with my teammates (some of whom I've played with for years)
.
.
.
134. Take it seriously

Now, don't get me wrong. I play my ass off and give 100%, and I don't like to lose, but in the end, who gives a shit. Our league is FULL of softball douches, just as you all have described. There's nothing better than making said douches get all pissy when they get beat by us. God I love that.

Another thing that's just as bad is when you play in a tournament, and the asses you play against are purposely playing WAY below their skill level. Our team has been together for about 4 years now. We're super laid-back, out to have fun, etc. We're co-ed as well. Occasionally, we'll enter into a tournament, mostly to get some more games in. The last time we did, we went 0-6, and were only in one game. The other games were absolute ass-whippings. I mean, the opposing teams did nothing but jack home-run after home-run. Yes, even the 'roided women were going deep. All we could do was laugh and enjoy the beautiful weather, and play as hard as we could.

Either way, don't let these idiots ruin your good time. I've played for so long now that it honestly doesn't bother me in the least. Unless the softball heroes are being loud and obnoxious. Then you let your play do the talking and shut their asses up.

Yeah, I don't get it. You can basically apply this whole "take too seriously" to everything. I've seen it in almost everything it seems.

You are exactly right, randomlinh. It applies to just about everything.

Godless:

Recreational, beer-league, D-league, co-ed softball is nowhere near the sport baseball is. Have you not seen the type of players that typically play in these leagues? We're complaining about these douches who are playing in these recreational leagues, and treating it like it's the World Series. They act like their the shit when 99% of the players out there don't care. They're too chicken-shit to play in a league with better players.

I play in competitive soccer and hockey leagues; I also play softball, but the league is a little more laid back. I try much harder in soccer and hockey because those are true athletic sports. Any 5'11 240 lb. homo can play softball as long as he has good hand eye coordination. Kind of hard to describe, but the feeling of converting on a shorthanded 2 on 1 in ice hockey is just amazing. I don't know, it makes a lot more sense to me than sitting in front of a TV watching the shit. But what do I know...

That being said, yeah, I also play softball and can recognize when a league is meant more for relaxed fun, and I adjust my playing style accordingly. I am amazed at the people that can't seem to do that. If I really wanted to play competitively I would switch to hardball, which requires far more athleticism.

I play adult softball and love it. But no, I definitely do not take it seriously.
