Five Somali pirates drowned when a wave washed off their getaway boat as they squabbled over over how to split their $3 million ransom.

The ransom had been paid to the pirates to end the world's biggest ship hijacking.

The canister full of cash was parachuted onto the Sirius Star - observed by the U.S. Navy who provided these images - and the two-month ordeal of the 25 crew, including two Britons, was finally over.

We got five dead bodies and we are still searching for the missing one. The waves were disastrous,' said Farah Osman, an associate of the gang.

It is not known what happened to the money or those who survived.c

6 people doing the job, then 5 dead, and 1 somehow missing, while money is gone.

This reminds me of the Dark Knight or any heist movie.....

Seems like a trick to me.

Seems like a trick to me.

Doesn't really sound like anyone in that group was bright enough to pull off something like that. Besides, they drowned... and not because they were so full of holes they became waterlogged.

It's a highly volitile oil tanker that can quite easily blow up if you shoot the wrong bit. The oil is worth nearly $100mil, the ship is worth at least that much too, and you have to figure each crew member is worth at least $1mil. So that's $250mil you lose if you send a strike force, instead of $3mil if you just pay a ransom.

Attacking the ship would be a foolish decision.

what is the cost for allowing other pirates to commit future piracy acts on this scale because they now know that ship owners are willing to pay out?

What if they just did? Maybe easier to give them the money and get them onto their own boat first.
