LOL, but...

Interesting idea. I find this to be a very legitimate and effective way of teaching english. Someone should write a research paper on using pop culture or its variations to teach a language. We invest so much of our times to the hobbies that our culture provides, that it is the best outlet to teach anything. Maybe schools should use this as an example to bring out effective textbooks to teach any subject material.

It's just like teaching someone another language by using music.

I learned German through Warcraft 3. Played on the Europe server and picked up the language through chatting and self learning. Then I moved to vent for hardcore 2v2 AT ladder with a German buddy.

haha i learned how to type in korean from playing those free mmo's from korea hahaha. I even reinforced my native language from playing those games. Socializing through a very fun medium = awesome way to learn.

i think using pop culture stuff is an effective way of reinforcing/remembering and introducing information, however, i think it would be very difficult to learn an entire language with just references. I could barely imagine trying to learn japanese with just pop cult. references. I mean, for learning kana and kanji, sure it makes sense. But i've found the easiest way to learn grammar and whatnot is to see it in relation to its english counterpart, memorize the structure, and practice. I think the main problem with this way is it enforces translation. Translation is the number one enemy of learning a foreign language, i think. I've got students in my class that struggle so hard because they keep trying to translate stuff, when most of it, you can't. It's easier to just think in the language you are learning.

I learned Japanese from playing import games. These new genearation of games talk and have subtitles and all that so its easy.

Kana is only 100 characters. True, I learned that on my own.
And of course I looked up grammar in books and on the net and asked people about it, there's no way you can look at something like Japanese and learn it magically. But once I got started its easy to build on it using video games.
And I passed level 1 of the Japanese language proficiency test so I would like to think that my Japanese doesn't suck nuts.

English is like second language there; it's greatly emphasized. You are probably right though, they probably go straight to mutilplayer.

I never knew there was another way. How do you "think" in another language?
My mind uses images, video and voices(english) to portray things to me.

Translation is slow for me, I still know barely any spanish after taking 4 years of it.

I don't know if you're Asian but if you do know Asian languages, Korean and Japanese are infinitely easier to learn than English. English and Russian are the two most difficult languages to learn. Chinese is much harder than Korean and Japanese as well. Have you seen those Chinese news reports where they interview caucasians who speak flawless Chinese? It's disgusting. Disgusting as in it puts my Chinese to shame. Ignore the accent part, and most of them don't even have much of an accent, but their grammar is flawless and they speak with a higher level of fluency than I do even though I consider my Chinese pretty damn good already.

Flip that around and think of the fobby people who can't speak English. Even if their accent is minimized, there's always these fundamental grammatical mistakes you notice and a different style of speaking. English is a lot harder. Just because you see people butchering the language doesn't mean you can't pick up other languages easier. Moreover, for those who already know English, picking up a Germanic language through video games is not too difficult. Think of those who learned Spanish or French or German in high school. Not too difficult was it?

that comparison isn't very valid imho. consider how many caucasians learn asian languages vs. how many asians learn english. you're gonna have literally millions and millions of asians with crap english. and of course they only have the best chinese speaking caucasians on chinese tv shows.
