Indeed, but I'd argue it's about the people practicing the religion far more than the religion itself. Christianity is not a fundamentally different religion than it was a few hundred years ago when Christians were brutally torturing and killing unbelievers and "witches", but Christians themselves seem to have decided that MAYBE Jesus wouldn't have gone for that quite so much. There is plenty in the Bible to support those actions, but modern Christians take a different view, for the most part...and I have no doubt their interpretation will be different a hundred years in the future.

Since many of the anti-Islam folks seem to be conservatives, perhaps I can offer a metaphor you might be more comfortable with. Religion, any religion, is like a firearm. It can be used for both good things and evil things, but the thing itself is neither, it's about the person wielding it. Just like a firearm doesn't kill people all by itself, religion does not bomb things or torture nonbeliever, individual people do.

Proof? Just because some slapnuts who calls himself a "holy man" says that does not make it so...and the few out of context quotes in the Koran usually given as "proof" are no worse than similar quotes widely sprinkled through the Bible.

There are so many quotes from both books (the Koran or the Bible), that you can prove each religion is both peaceful and hateful. It requires a peaceful man to interpret it peacefully for the religion to be peaceful.
