What about when a representative says republicans just want old people and the sick to die, and that is their answer to health care? Do comments like that count to in your book? Or that they are racist for wanting better border control?

Old reply, but since this thread was bumped... ;)

I think there is a lot of stupid language around actual issues, like talking about health care by saying Republicans want old people to get sick and die or saying Democrats want "death panels". But what really bugs me is issues where not only is the language stupid, but the actual issue would still be moronic no matter how good the debate. Border control is a serious issue, the "ground zero mosque" is not.

People die from a lack of medical treatment, not a lack of insurance.

The sad fact is that there isn't enough medical treatment for everyone that wants it; This means that the price of medical treatment goes up so as to act as a rationing agent, which in turn increases the amount of human and capital resources that go into medicine.

You do know that rationing health care and 'giving away' free medicine while 'controlling the cost of health care' leads to more people dead in the long run, don't you?

Medical treatment isn't a finite natural resource. And demand for treatment isn't very elastic. Sick people want treatment, MORE people aren't going to want their heart valve replaced just because the operation is suddenly cheap.

I really see no fundamental reason we can't have enough medical treatment for everyone who needs it.

The problem with that idea is that it would mean that the top 5% of the population that is wealthy would have to be a little less wealthy, and we all know that if you start taxing the wealthy the Devil will come to Earth and smite us.
