It's crazy here in NYC. It's like a post-war apocalypse, with people clamoring for gas. Every gas station in my area is sold out. NYPD presence at every station. For those stations that do have gas, the lines stretch for 3 city blocks, only to find out there is a $20 limit.

It's surreal. I have enough fuel to get to work and back tomorrow, so I am not worried. Subway near me is also in service, so that is an option for next week, but it's insane here in NY. I guess this is what it felt like during the gas crisis in the 70s.

Insanity.

Motorists in New York and New Jersey exchanged words – and reportedly even shoves and punches – as they faced a second day of stressful, sometimes miles-long lines Thursday at the gas stations that still had both electricity and supplies after superstorm Sandy.

Makes you realize just how fragile it all is and just how fast it could all fall apart.

It also makes you realize that we'd pay anything for gas. If there were a station offing gas for $10 a gallon, I'd actually go and fill up there right now. :(

Mmmhmm I was in the same situation with Irene. I had to GTFO the area it was the only solution.

If it weren't for the ability to GTFO the area it would have been Katrina gang looting part 2 if everyone was forced to wait it out. But I do know EXACTLY what you are talking about :)

fill up your car before hand

and then buy some gas canister

and fill them up

HOLY Jesus Christ thank you for your blessing in making me smart

Lived in Florida for 16 years, experienced this quite a few times. Most recently in 2004. Life goes on.

Fortunately for New Yorkers there is a law in place that they can only jack the price up 10% to what it was before the emergency.

There was no such law on the books for Louisiana after Katrina and stations that did have gas jacked the price to $8 a gallon.

Where is that? New Jersey?

Maybe they don't have the 10% law like New York.

Sure, I would still buy gas if it was $1/gallon more expensive than it is today here in Sweden.

I'm over here in North Jersey and just drove around for an hour. Every place that is still open has cars lined up for what looks like a mile at least with police directing traffic. Forget the Garden State Parkway, you'll be in line for hours. Cars were lined up at a gas station that wasn't open until 8am. It was 3am when I saw that place and I would have been the 20th or so person in line if I had waited.

I wonder.. if one brings one of those plastic portable tanks to fill up and take to their car/generator or just to store for emergencies, do they have to wait in line on foot with all the cars? That would look funny, like what they don't allow at drive-thrus.

SNAP....lurker...mine.

Heard a ridiculous story that NJ was turning away help from power companies because they didn't have a union cards. Any truth to that?
