then I haven't played with it yet.

Its pretty common for me to break my toys. I broke my cell phone within 24 hours.

I just hope the OP swapped it for him

Yeha we gave him a new one. He had to go to our warehouse to pick it up though. That was our service department that did that and had nothing to do with me though.

Even the manufacturers recommend not flashing the BIOS unless you're trying to fix something specific. BIOS is not a driver and shouldn't be treated like one. The failure rate on BIOS flash is much higher than on drivers, and the consequences are much more severe.

Well done.

GASP.. Things don't always work on laptops right out of the box.

GASP.. BIOS updates can fix those issues. Why is that so hard?

I do agree with this, though. I wouldn't flash a laptop bois for S's and G's, but we don't know the specifics of this customer's motivation.

This was my point. He WASN'T FIXING ANYTHING, he just wanted to flash it.

hrmm...anytime I've ever done any troubleshooting with a manufacturer, the first thing they always ask is if I've updated the bios/firmware/drivers.

I would understand flaming him for screwing up flashing his bios but not for wanting to update it.

Marking this post for possible ownage of the year write-in.

You'd flash a laptop for the same reason you'd flash a motherboard...how hard is it to understand that? (and you ARE flashing the motherboard when you flash a laptop...they also have motherboards...)

The Fact that the OP even posted the question.... means he doesn't understand computers or technology.

At this point, i would believe the OP's technical knowledge rivals those who used to work at CompUSA.

He's not a technician... he's a salesman.

Some of the big brand laptops include automatic update utilities to download manufacturer drivers and stuff like that. Some of those update utilities will actually flash the bios if a bios update is released.

it obviously does not apply to everything but unless there is a bios update to specifically fix something that is broken there is no reason to flash them

pretty sure im running stock bios on every single comp in my house

hell im still running the same nvidia drivers that came with my GTX 285

says the guy with the rooted droid :awe: ;)

makes sense...

the op is just in sales.

he's not in the technical support department. he just needs to know enough to bullshit a sale.

We've figured it out... OP works at Best Buy.

Yeah that's right I did't know laptops had motherboards.

Sold an ASUS N61 laptop to a customer the other day. Very nice all round laptop. Very nice guy too. So he goes home and loads his stuff on the laptop, customizes it a bit and for no real reason decides to flash the BIOS. Boom he now had a $1600 brick. Brings it in today and we have to RMA it, he's going to go get another one. LOL why would you flash the BIOS on a laptop for no reason? On a motherboard I can sort of understand it because you usually have some fail-safes, but not on a laptop.

doesn't sound like it...

Real question is why is the OP selling defective laptops? If he can't sell computers that work properly maybe they should switch to bowling balls or something. ():)

So if your laptop has a BIOS for "Fixed the WIFI function can't work after system reboot."...Why would you NOT want to update it?

Power went out once when I was flashing a desktop mobo years ago. Luckily I happened to have another identical one lying around and this was back in the days of removable EEPROMs so I just booted it with the spare and hot swapped the broken one back in then re flashed, bingo bango, fixed.

Damn, power outage during a BIOS flash has got to be up there with winning the lottery odds-wise.

If an update exists there are usually documented issues. Only every now and then is one updated for something like "added support for additional CPUs" only. Before settling in with a new computer, I'd certainly want to head any potential issues off at the pass with an up-to-date BIOS, especially while I'm still under warranty.

I'm really surprised by the number of people who would update their BIOS just for the hell of it. I have always had the attitude that a BIOS update is only ever applied to fix a specific issue. If the update doesn't solve a problem you are experiencing, you don't install it.

See when most people talk about motherboards they usually mean the desktop and or server variety. Of course laptops have motherboards, as do cell phones and most electronics these days but they tend not to be what you think about when one mentions motherboards.
