I'm not going to get into an argument...but I own a ghz t-bird and a p2 450, and the athlon is much more stable then the p2. I'v never had compatiblity issues either...I like how you Intellers make broad genralizations.

My system:

1GHz Tbird @ 1.2GHz, 1.85v
$13 Taisol HSF
Asus A7V
320MB PC133 SDRAM
Geforce2 GTS @ 230/380
2 x 40GB Maxtor HDD
1 x 13GB WD HDD
Toshiba 12x DVD
Ricoh 6x4x24 CD-RW
Iomega Zip100 IDE
SBLive! X-Gamer
Linksys NIC
Zoom PCI Modem

Perfectly frickin stable and faster than an Intel system. Especially for the price. The last Intel system I owned (a PeeIII 550) was much more flaky than any AMD system I have owned. And AMD is so much cheaper :)

I can't believe that the 1GHz is under $200 now. That's a hot deal! I paid $260 just three weeks ago!

Ok, I believe you can overclock athlons but not by much. I have heard like 100 mhz. Can anyone give us stats on what they have overclocked their thunderbirds to?

My Duron 600 (same core as a T-bird, so results should be comparable) is quite happy runnning at 1050Mhz@1.85vols with an old Alpha HS I ripped off my old BP6 rig.

probegt21, please tell me you're just yanking our chains, here... I'm
truly not trying to be abrasive, but have you not read ANY reviews or posts about the overclockability of BOTH the Duron and T-bird??? People are taking Duron 650's and creating 1GHz processors! They are doing the same (or greater) with the T-birds!

Again, I'm not trying to be rude, but PLEASE do a little reading first!

It seems most people who got duron 600 mhz gets about 950 mhz average for this "low end" chip.
People who got thunderbird 700 mhz gets around 1100 mhz average for this chip.

I got my duron 600 running at 1050 at 1.80 voltage. Haven't tried higher. yet.

I think MHz numbers don't mean too much when comparing AMD and Intel.
AMD cannot be run on Pentium chipsets, and vice versa.
Only way to compare is in terms of execution time for the same process, and even then the motherboard and its chipset (including FSB) can be a factor.

Alright, bring on the flame!! I have flame retardent suit. :)

i've got an 800 duron, clocked at 963 (9.0 x 107) on the asus a7v, rock solid, haven't tried going higher (yet), i also have a 900 tbird clocked at 1010 (10 x 101, have tried going higher but gets unstable, but it is on the abit kt7 raid. i'm sure the board has a little to do with it, the asus is supposed to be a bit more stable, but everyone i've talked to has had the same experience- the duron is more overclockable than the tbird.

Weeeeeee!

I have both.

I must say I like the AMD just because Intel is getting goofy.

mmmm yeah, 400.00 ram...good idea.

noxipoo's got the right idea. Let the people who want to believe that about AMD continue to buy Intel, serves em right:)

But it's PC800 RDRAM! It's gotta be 8x faster than 100mhz SDRAM.... NOT! What a rip off for memory...

I have both (4 computer home LAN > 1 gig each) and feel that DIVERSITY is the spice of life. AMD and Intel both make good chips.
Last time I did a Q3 arena Demo the PIII beat out the same speed Athlon, but I feel the AMD is a better VALUE.

too bad there is no 760mp chipset out yet, I would buy two 1 gig tbirds.

Celey 766 or athlon 950 either for 167. I have a celeron 566 running at 850, and I am glad it runs at that. But that is still ~= a p3 766 or 800. I would love to have a athlon 950 in my machine. Talking about overclocking, all of these chips can overclock. I seen a p4 overclocked to 1.6 on some of their test, but even overclocked a celeron would need to be at about a 1.1 or 1.2 ghz to match up with an Athlon 950 in almost all apps.

The celeron is a nice card, and it has served its purpose. The duron and thunderbirds are cheaper and better. The duron card at 800 mhz blew this celey out of the water in almost every test. AT and TH has done their test and right now the athlon is a better chip at about half the cost.

Just think for the price of the 766 you could get a Duron 750 and a brand new mother board. And in some instances a stick of 64 mbs of ram. And it will run at normal bus about 10 to 20 percent faster than the celeron.

It is true that Intel has an advantage on AMD in the Multi-processor systems. But for the price of a multi-processor intel setup, you could build 2 AMD servers, and divide the networking tasks between them, or subnet them.

Anyway, a multiprocessed system is really needed for an application server, and is only slightly helpful for every other type of server with less than 50 workstations.

Forget about seeing any use in the second processor for Win98 or ME. So, if you have an application server, and you can't subnet your network with a backup domain controller, get the Intel. Otherwise, go with AMD for price and performance.

I will go with AMD for price, but will stick to PIII for performance.
In my book : an AMD Mhz < an Intel Mhz
