LOL- borrowed my wife's car, traded it in for a van without her knowledge

We had an 2008 HHR for the last couple of years, and while it got great gas milage, it was WAY to small for a family of 4. On the way home, I saw a 2008 Chrysler Town and Country sitting on the lot- it has 7 passenger seating, dual DVD screens, navigation, sirrus radio, and loaded with everything else for $19K. I stopped in, traded in her car, and bought the van, then drove home and parked it in the garage like nothing happened.

I'm still trying to scrape her jaw off the floor after she walked in the garage last night to go the store 😀 Should have recorded it.

I'm assuming that since you're still posting she wasn't too attached to the car.

Minivan = Death of the Soul

Minivans are great. I'll give them serious consideration for my next vehicle, but it largely hinges on gas mileage. I prefer a higher driving stance, and like small SUVs. I really like full size vans, but they suck down way too much fuel. My old Dodge 1 ton got about 8mpg going to the mountains with a boat on the roof :^/

A mini van isn't that much bigger than a HHR. Was the minivan new or used? 19K is quite a steal if it's in good condition.

Wait - so you dropped probably five figures for a new car without talking to the wife? Yeesh. Either you've got the best, most trusting relationship in the world, or are asking for trouble.

I thought maybe you gave her this minivan??

HAHA that's awesome.

I would love to do this for my wife. We currently have a Freestyle which fits our needs, but I know she would love to have a T&C or something like it.

Uh yeh. I'd probably be out of sex for the next five years...or ran over by said minivan if I did that. One because I didn't consult the CFO in the purchase...but more importantly because my wife has some deep rooted, irrationally insane disdain for minivans.

She was literally in tears when I put my foot down and bought my Mazda5 which is about the most "unvanlike" mini-van you can buy.

I drive a minivan. It's a road warrior, and I can pack shitloads of stuff/people in it.

It has Stow-n-Go seats that disappear under the floorboards, and I can inflate a queen-sized air mattress in the back.

Then again, the vehicle and all of its fuel, maintenance, and insurance are supplied to me as a work perk, with unlimited personal use. That makes it a bit sweeter. 🙂

My beater is a 89 dodge caravan that I've had for 10 years. I'm single and have no kids but I do have three dogs lol. It really is the best vehicle I have ever owned. Not the coolest by a long shot but it drives great and can haul anything I've ever needed it too.

Very few people truly appreciate the beauty of sliding doors until they have kids.

One of the last Durangos I noticed looked just like a minivan, but without the sliding door. It was kind of ugly TBH, but a sliding door would have fully redeemed it. Ground clearance 4WD, and sliding door. You couldn't ask for much more in a vehicle.

For years (pre-kids) I mocked the mini-van people and swore I would never get one. Then I witness my brothers kids getting in and out of his easily one day. Then I got a sweet deal on one. Now I will likely ALWAYS own one. Too versitile not to have one. We'll be shopping for a new car likely next spring. It will likely be another mini-van.
